A silver denarius found during the Crewe & Nantwich Metal Detecting Club Rally on 09/03/14. The obverse features the bust of Faustina facing right with the inscription 'DIVA FAVSTINA', on the reverse is a robed female figure facing left and the inscription 'AETER/NITAS'.

Silver denarius of Hadrian (117-138 AD). Reverse type is a draped figure of Pietas (personification of piety or religious devotion) standing left holding a cornucopia with the left hand and pouring a libation offering onto an altar from a patera bowl held in the right hand. CO(S) (I)II on reverse. HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS around laureate head right on obverse. Coin measures 19mm dia, 3mm thick, weighing 2.7g.

Silver Denarius of Tiberius AD 14-37 (stepson of the first real emperor, Augustus). Obverse, Tiberius bust facing right, with the legend TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVGVSTVS around. Obverse is his mother, Livia, seated with the legend PONTIF MAXIM around the edge. Found with a metal detector in 2012.

A silver or perhaps silver plated coin of a silver denarius of Augustus dating to the period 18 BC to 16 BC (Reece Period 1). CAESARI AVGVSTO or SPQR reverse type depicting a triumphal quadriga r. surmounted by four miniature galloping horses. Spanish mint of Colonia Patricia. RIC I (rev.ed.), p.48, no.96 or 108a. It is a brockage with the quadriga design being incuse on one side, probably due to another coin being stuck in the die during striking.

This purports to be an Imperial Roman struck silver Denarius of Vespasian (AD69-79), from around 71 AD. The obverse has the laureate head right with the reverse showng Pax seated left with cauduceus & branch. So far so good, however, the execution is poor with the portrait and the seated Pax being very poorly described. A close examination of the rim reveals that there is a 'core' with a silver-sheet coat. It is therefore considered to be a contemporary fake.

Silver plated contemporary copy of a denarius of Faustina I (DIVA FAVSTINA), AVGVSTA, prototype struck at Rome, c. 141-50. RIC II c.f. 362 This little coin purports to be a genuine Roman silver denarius of Faustina the senior (Faustina I). It also carries the 'diva' inscription on the obverse, indicative of it having been struck after her death and deification in AD141. This is a fragment of a Roman silver denarius, probably of Septimius Severus (AD193-211). The Obverse has a bearded portrait of the emperor facing right. The reverse has a standing figure (probably Mars) facing left with a staff and laurel wreath. The coin is badly damaged with a section broken out from the lower right quadrant of the obverse and it may also have been clipped. It has a blundered legend on the reverse and so is probably a contemporary forgery.

This interesting little item is suggestive of a denarius of Trajan (AD98–AD117) but it fails in not being in silver. It has the characteristics for that coin with the bust of Trajan facing right on the obverse and Dacian seated facing right on the reverse. It is equal in size to an original and looks to be well formed; however, it is most probably a contemporary fake in an indeterminate base metal that has now long lost its silvered surface. This is a struck Roman silver denarius of Trajan (98-117). The coin depicts the portrait bust of Trajan facing right on the obverse and the reverse has Victory standing left, half draped and holding wreath and palm. The overall impression is of a poorly struck, off centre coin with much surface wear and some pitting to the obverse. There is a crack in the flan running from the rim to the centre of the coin at the 2:30 position when viewed from the obverse. A similar coin can be found at RIC II 128.

This is a Roman silver denarius of Hadrian, AD 119-122. The obverse has a laureate bust right, draped left shoulder and the reverse has Felicitas standing left with caduceus & cornucopia. This coin is in fair condition; however, the surface appearance has a debased silver look and what looks like an eruption of the core on the obverse which may be copper alloy. Therefore it might suggest that this is a contemporary fake.

This is a Roman silver denarius of Antonius Pius (138-161), or at least, it purports to be: TR POT XIX COS IIII, Fortuna right. If correct, the coin would date to 155-156 AD, corresponding to RIC III 251. The obverse has the laureate head right and the reverse - Fortuna standing right holding rudder on a globe and cornucopia. This is a Roman silver denarius, probably of Antoninus Pius (AD138-161). That idea based on the portrait bust facing right with the profile of a probable beard on the obverse and the depiction of Fortuna standing left holding rudder & cornucopia, on the reverse. The coin is now much corroded with a dark grey/black patina but, under close inspection, there is evidence of the silver content with small but numerous flecks of silver, over and through the coin.
