A, possibly pierced, incomplete silver-plated copper-alloy core of a contemporary copy of a denarius of Caracalla, AD196-217 (with a reverse of Septimius Severus), dating to c. AD 201-210 (Reece period 10). Probably based on coins from the mint of Rome.
Obverse legend reads [ANTO]NINVS PIVS AVG. Obverse shows Laureate head right.
Reverse legend reads [...]S[...]. Reverse shows Victory flying left holding ribbons over shield on base.
This appears to be a coin copying the obverse of Caracalla (cf. RIC IV, pt.I, p.230ff.) with a reverse of Septimus Severus (cf. BMC V, pt.31, no.7).
Die axis is 12 o'clock. Diameter is 18mm, weight is 1.91g. A 'u' shaped notch is present at the edge of the flan, at the 7 o'clock position when viewed from the obverse, which might be the incomplete remains of a piercing set close to the edge of the flan and now across the edge of the present edge of the flan. This notch has a width of 1.4mm.
