Prototype: Eastern Mint. RIC IV, pt. 1, p. 140, cf. nos 364-6. Although silver denarii of this period can have surface verdigris due to base metal in the silver, this piece does appear to show the base-metal core of a plated coin.

This coin combines an obverse and reverse type from two different issues of Caracalla's coinage, cf. RIC IV.1 p. 216 no. 27 for the reverse type, with an obverse of the issue from AD 198-199 (RIC IV.1 nos. 18-23).
