Nicholas Rhodes (Secretary General of the Oriental Numismatic Society; pers. comm. via John Naylor PAS Finds Advisor) notes that this is one of the more common Acenese gold coins and should have a gold fineness of about 60%, it is also a little under the standard weight for this issue of 0.59g.

A gold double-escudo coin, or 'cob', struck in a South American mint by Spanish authorities. The coin is heavily clipped to the extent that the legends are entirely missing. However, the surviving types suggest it is probably a 2 escudo coin minted in the Nuevo Reino mint in Bogota, Columbia and probably struck during the reign of Charles II of Spain (B. Cook, British Museum, pers. comm.). The Habsburg arms on the coin suggest it dates prior to 1700 AD, perhaps c.1665-1700 AD.

A gold Portugese half Moeda with a value of 2000 Reis, of King John V (Ioannes) of Portugal 1706-50. One Moeda or Moedore meaning 'Port. moeda da ouro' or 'money of gold,' is normally worth 4000 reis, this type of coin is also sometimes called a crusado or cruzado because of the cross on the reverse, 1 crusado is worth 400 reis so our half moidore which is worth 2000 reis is 5 crusados.
