Description:
A gold guinea of William III dating to AD 1701. Crowned cruciform shield reverse. Mint of London. The coin has been pierced at the 12 o'clock position on the obverse (6 o'clock on the reverse) suggesting it was worn as an item of jewellery such as a pendant. The coin displays extensive wear on the obverse suggesting this side was hidden from view.

The obverse shows a laureate head right with the inscription GEORGIUS. III DEI.GRATIA. The reverse shows a crowned shield of arms, and the inscription M.BF.ET.H.REX.FD.B.ET.L.DS.R.I.A.T.ET.E. with the date 1785 split by the crowned shield. Spink 3728 (2004).

Description: A post-medieval gold guinea of James II (1685-8), dated 1688 (Spink 3402). The coin has been pierced near the edge above the bust (i.e. at the 12 o'clock position on the obverse). The perforation is oval in shape due to wear, pulling the edge outwards suggesting the coin was probably suspended as a pendant.
Dimensions: 25.1mm diameter. 8.05g.
Discussion: This is a coin which has been altered to become a pendant. The wear pattern of the loop suggests it was a well-worn pendant. There is no evidence of pierced gold coins from hoards of this date, re-entering …
