A complete copper alloy Chinese Qianlong period coin dating to the Post Medieval period. The coin was issued by Emperor Qianlong (also known as Gaozong) who ruled between AD 1736-1795. The coin has the characteristic square hole in its centre. The obverse has four Chinese characters arranged around the hole, read top (1), bottom (2), right (3), left (4). This inscription therefore reads (1) Qian (2) long (3) tong (4) bao (Quianlong tongbao) and translates as 'Circulating treasure of Qianlong'. An incomplete and very worn Post Medieval silver coin. The only detail that remains on the coin is on the reverse where a long cross fourchee over flat top shield can be seen. It is most likely that the coin was minted in the reign of one of the Tudor monarchs and therefore dates broadly from the later part of the 16th century.
