The coin is Group D (North 2225; Spink 2791), dating to 1636-1638. Spink (2010, 276); North (1975, 135). This coin measures 29.15mm in diameter, 1.28mm in thickness and weighs 6.3g.

Worn, it measures 31.19mm in diameter, 0.65mm in thickness and weighs 6.5g. There is evidence that the obverse face has been defaced with a gouged linear cross to the centre of the bust - possibly anti Royalist behaviour.

Shilling of Charles I, a contemporary forgery, as copper is visible at one point on the obverse, and the detail is rather crude. However the thickness of the silver coating is good, there is no copper visible at the edges where the coin appears to have been clipped, and the weight (5.78g) is nearly correct. The coin appears to be very worn, rather than faintly struck. The obverse shows a crowned bust facing left with XII behind the head.
