Silver coin. Worn penny of Charles I (1625-1649), with a central piercing executed from the obverse obliterating the face of the monarch. This act was clearly not intended to display the likeness of His Sacred Majesty, and its destruction may rather have been intended, perhaps as a political statement. As pierced coins of the period found their way into hoards it cannot be asserted that the piercing demonetised the coin – and indeed, any propagandist benefit would have depended on its continued circulation. An extremely worn, incomplete Post Medieval silver penny of Charles I (AD 1625-1649) dating AD 1625-1649. Possibly Group D. Uncertain initial mark. No inner circles. See North (1991) Vol.2 pg.162 no.2268. Parts of the outer edge of the coin are missing and there is a c.2.65mm tear near the centre of the obverse from around 5 o'clock to around 6 o'clock with two c.0.90mm long tears at either end of the main tear. Diameter: 12.44mm. Thickness: 0.39mm. Weight: 0.36g. Die axis: 5.
