A Postmedieval copper alloy rose farthing of Charles I (1625-1649). Rose Type 2 or Type 3, dating to 1636-1644 (North 2291-2293). The obverse depicts a crown with sceptres through it and the reverse a crowned rose. The initial mark is illegible. The coin measures 13.3mm in diameter and weighs 0.75g. It is fairly worn with damage to one side resulting in the loss of part of the obverse and reverse legends. Reference: North, J. J. 1991. English Hammered Coinage, Volume 2. A fragment of Post-Medieval Royal farthing (type 3, Maltravers 'round') of Charles I (1625-49), probably a counterfeit. The coin is broken from coin centre, slight wear. Obverse: Crown with crossed sceptres, inner beaded circle Reverse: Crowned harp, inner beaded circle Date: 1634-6 Reference: See Peck pp 45-6, there were so many counterfeit farthings in circulation by 1635, that all the farthings were withdrawn and replaced by a new issue, the Rose Farthings.
