A complete post-medieval silver shilling of Charles I (AD 1625-1649). Group D Fourth Bust, AD1635-6. North 2225. This coin measures 30.6mm in dameter and is 1mm thick, weighing 6.0g. It is not completely circular and has probably been clipped. Obverse: Crowned bust facing left, XII behind.  CAROLUS D.'G.' MA'BR.FR.ET HI.' REX.  Initial mark: crown Reverse: garnished oval shield, no lettering.  Legend: CHRISTO AUSPICE REGNO.  Mint mark crown. Bust possibly defaced and/or rubbed.

A clipped post-medieval silver shilling of Charles I (1625-1649), probably minted at the Tower under Parliament. The initial mark is partially clipped and worn smooth, and is thus illegible. The obverse bust and reverse cross most closely match North (1991, 160) Group F ref:2231. This would date the coin to between 1641 and 1643. Obverse: [.CAROLVS.D.G.MAG.BR.FR.ET.H]I.REX.; Crowned bust left with XII (mark of value) behind head Reverse: .CHRISTO.AVSPICE.REGNO. (I reign under the auspice of Christ); Square topped shield over cross Moline Diameter: 29.65mm. Weight: 5.9g. DA=4:00.
