It is a quarter thistle merk of James VI, dating from AD 1601 - 1604 with the reverse legend: REGEM IOVA PROTEGIT, depicting a crowned thistle. Spink (2003) coins of Scotland, Ireland and the Islands, number 5499. Dimensions: Diameter 20.6 mm, weight 1.37g.

The coin is in a good condition with a little wear on both faces and clipping along the edges.

The coin is in a very poor condition with a great deal of wear on both faces obscuring many details of identification. Roughly a third is missing losing much of the inscriptions; it has been bent and almost split on an oblique angle..

A Post-Medieval silver coin: a Scottish twenty pence piece of Charles I (1625 - 49), third coinage, probably Briot's issue, dating from AD1632 - 47. There is a large edge chip from 2 o'clock to 5 o'clock on the obverse. It is 16.3mm in diameter and 0.5mm thick. It weighs 0.56gm.

It is possible that this is a contemporary copy as the lettering is somewhat crude and there is also a die error as there is a letter missing from the reverse legend.
