A Post Medieval copper alloy Irish 'Gun Money' halfcrown of James II (AD 1685-88) dating to 1690. Reverse depicting crown over sceptres, dividing J R, XXX above and Mar (March) below. Spink (2002:169), no.6579.
These were official tokens issued in Ireland when James attempted to recover the English throne and and were ultimately intended to be exchanged for silver coins of equivalent value. They were made from old cannon, bells and scrap metal. James failed in his attempt, and the coins were never exchanged.

Reverse: Crown over crossed two sceptres, VI between, J R positioned either side. Legend: 1689. MAG.BR.FRA.ET.HIB.REX
These coins Irish issues produced by James in his war to reclaim the throne from William III and are known as gunmoney pieces as they were made from guns and other ammunition melted down to pay James’ troops. They were tokens to be exchanged for silver coins at the end of the of the war.

An incomplete, Post-Medieval copper alloy farthing, dating from the reign of Charles I (AD 1625-1649). A chip is missing from 12 o’clock to around 4 o’clock, the surface is quite worn, and there is some corrosion. There is also a 4.46mm long fracture at 9 o’clock. The coin is a Maltravers Round farthing, depicting a crown over crossed sceptres.
