A complete copper alloy Irish 'Gun Money' Halfcrown of James II (AD 1685-88) dating to AD 1689. Reverse depicts crown over sceptres, dividing J R, XXX above and Oct (October) below. Diameter: 32.34m, Thickness: 2.37mm, Weight: 13.5g Spink (2002:169), no.6579. These were official tokens issued in Ireland when James attempted to recover the English throne and were ultimately intended to be exchanged for silver coins of equivalent value. They were made from old cannon, bells and scrap metal. James failed in his attempt, and the coins were never exchanged.
