Hammered Silver Penny from the reign of Henry VIII (1509 - 1547). This penny is from the Durham Ecclesiastical Mint, and was struck under Bishop Cuthbert Tunstall. This is verified by the presence of letters C & D divided by the shield on the reverse side of the coin struck in 1530. The coin appears to be in very good to fine condition, and does not appear to have been clipped. The head area of the portrait appears to be a little worn but still discernable, pleasant toning. It has not been cleaned by chemicals.

Hammered silver penny of Henry VIII, Durham mint, Bishop Thomas Wolsey, 1526-1529. North 1811. The coin is heavily clipped and worn so only part of the legends is visible, and the area where the initial mark would have been, just to the right of the Kings's crown at the beginning of the obverse legend, is missing. The obverse reads [H.]D.G. [ROSA S]IE SPIA, with the King seated on his throne. The reverse reads CIVI[T]AS D[VR]RAM (City of Durham), with a trefoil as initial mark, with a T and W on either side of the shield and a hat below the shield. Max diameter 15.05, weight 0.54.
