A worn Post Medieval silver sixpence of William III (AD 1694-1702) dated to 1695-1702. Mint uncertain. Both faces are completely worn and the coin has been bent along one edge. Worn and bent coins such as this one are often described as 'love tokens'. Dr Kevin Leahy notes in FAKL-A043BC: 'Love tokens' were made using coins dating from the time of Elizabeth I (1558-1603) to the reign of Ann (1702-1714) with some Georgian examples. A complete post-Medieval silver sixpence of William III (1694-1702), minted at London and dated 1697 on coin. Obverse: GVLIELMVS.III.DEI.GRA.; Laureate and draped bust facing right. Reverse: 97.MAG.BR.FRA.ET.HIB.REX.16; Four shields within which are a harp, one lion rampant, three lions passant and three fleurs-de-lis, all around a central circle with the lion of Nassau within, creating a cruciform shape. The coin is 21mm in diameter, and weighs 2.92g.
