Bifacially knapped sub-rectangular core or crude handheld chopping tool, of pale grey flint with darker grey flint below the cortex, there are rusty iron scrapes and a few spots to both faces. One edge is thick, blunt and retains the patch of thin, weathered cortex, the shorter sides are different to each other; one is straight and has an edge slightly less than 90 degrees, the other is rounded in plan and has an edge c. 45 degrees. The edge opposing the thick edge is damaged by ancient, hinged flakes but the remaining original undamaged area between the hinges retains an edge c. 40 d…

Small "chopper core" in lightly rolled condition, of Wymer J,J, (1999) type A, hard hammer struck from alternate faces with only five main flake removals, three from one face and two from the other. The removals to shape the cutting edge are patinated brown, the main body of the flint is cortical, now thin and weathered, of a mottled white and grey colour, the butt has an old transverse break across the base, this could be intentional modification though it is patinated differently (black) to the clearly modified surfaces. Small amounts of recent damage to the …

Lower Palaeolithic bi-facial chopper knapped from a quartzite cobble from the Triassic period. The chopper is an sub-oval with flakes being removed from one terminal. One face has three flake scars and the other face at least two, but the details are not clear due to encrustation on the surface. There is only one hammerstone mark visible along an edge where a flake has been removed from the other face. The chopper has been very rolled, therefore the scar edges are rounded. The chopper measures 103.71mm long, 70.71mm wide, 43.68mm thick and weighs 462g. The object has been i…

An incomplete flint tool possibly a chopper, mesolithic-Neolithic in date. The tool is a lozenge shaped flake the ventral side has some small removals that may be later as they break the patinated surface of the object. The dorsal side has three longitudinal flake scars from previous removals with only a small bit of cortex remaining at the distal end. The whole surface has become patinated to a pale grey-white colour except where some later flakes have broken the surface, possibly from natural damage. At the distal end there is some evidence of retouch around the broadest point. L…

A complete quartzite Chopper core edge of the Palaeolithic period, c. BC 800,000 - c. BC 40,000. The quartzite edge has been struck from a pebble core. It has been worked unifacially (one side). Approximately 70% of the pebble has been worked. One large flake has been removed, and natural breaks have been made use of, to create the main shape, with a few smaller flakes removed from the right hand side to create an edge. By using the natural break it has created a bifacial effect with only unifacial working. It measures 102.5 mm in length, 80.9 mm wide and 39.31 mm thick. It weig…

A flint-knapped possible Early to Middle Palaeolithic 'Clactonian' flint chopper, c. 500,000-40,001 BC. The object is entirely covered in a light brown cortex, save for the knapped end, which has a large prepared platform and four elongated removals; the distal face seems to bear a hinge fracture below the platform. The exposed knapped surfaces have an overall even blue-grey patina.

Lower Paleolithic quartzite pebble chopper-core, 78mm long, 46mm wide and 39mm thick. The stone weighs 171grams and has been worked from three angles to remove at least 9 flakes to form a triangular point which appears to have some wear. We refer to these as chopper-cores as we can't be certain whether the whole object is being used or the flakes are being used as cutting tools. The object is part of a growing number of Quartzite tools which are being found in this area. Leicestershire museums holds the important Waite Collection of pebble tools which was found along, the Leicest…

Incomplete flint chopper, semi-circlular in plan and lozenge-shaped in profile and section. The dorsal and ventral faces are both retouched along the existing margin, at the chopping edge, but the edge is also damaged and fractured so that it has a stepped appearance. The edges of the flake scars are generally smooth and the surface appears to have been water-worn. A patch of cortex remains near the broken edge on the ventral face. The flint is a mottled grey-buff colour with orange patches on the surface where the flint has been stained from proximity to iron, but the colour and te…

A tool made on a nodule of dark brown translucent flint, full of opaque light grey and some coarser inclusions. The knapper has removed most of the cortex from the nodule and then with a hard hammer struck off a large squat flake. This has truncated the previous large flake scars on the dorsal surface and left only slight adjustments to be made to the plan to make a remarkably symmetrical chopper wedge. From the right a tranchet removal has thinned the blade and further small strikes have smoothed the dorsal surface. Discontinuous bifacial semi-abrupt retouch has given the blade a sha…

Flint chopper, sub-oval in plan with ridges that suggest retouch or use. It isn't a core because there are no platforms and the ridges suggest that it may have been used as a chopper. It is grey flint with pale mottles. The cortex is pale brown and may be classed as secondary. Most likely it derived from a local beach pebble. Mercer (1981) shows a similar object, though described as a core, on page 119, Figure 50, Number L13.

A chopping tool that has been unifacially flaked to create a cutting edge. Much cortex remains so it can be comfortably held with gloss being present over much of the surface indicating use wear. This tool is sub-oval in plan and plano-convex in section. Butler (2005) illustrates a similar example on p115, fig46, 8 which dates to the Early Neolithic.

Flint semi-discoidal pebble chopper, almost ovoid in plan and plano convex in profile. On the dorsal side the left margin, the distal edge and right margin have wide retouchings with some abrasions mid way on the right edge. The ventral side has central fracture damage and areas of retouch on the left and right margins. The flint is translucent grey brown with an area of incipient blue patination in colour. It has a secondary cortex of grey brown tones. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar example on page 140, Fig. 5.126, No. 15 which is dated ot the Neolithic period.

Flint pebble chopping tool, oval in plan and oblong in profile. The upper left margin shows wear on the edge from possible chopping use. It has iron stains and is pale cream grey in colour with over 50% cortex covering the surface area. Pers. comm Anna Lawson Jones. A possible Upper Palaeolithic flint chopper / tool, possibly dating to between 40, 000 BC and 10, 000 BC. The find consists of a sub oval piece of a light brown flint nodule. It has been formed from either a flake of a large nodule or from the nodule itself. The flint tool has been damaged by movement in the soil due to plough roll and as such is badly abraded. There is a small amount of evidence of direct percussion (conchoidal ripples) to the distal edge, to potentially form a serrated edge. However this could be the result of damage due to plough roll. The flint t…

An irregular flint flake of possible Neolithic date, possibly a chopper. The tool appears to have had some retouch to make it more comfortable to hold, and there is slight retouch (or damage?) on what may be the chopping edge. Other worked flints and a Neolithic ground axe have been recovered from the same area. The flint is a pale to dark grey in colour with some cortex remaining.

A rough chopper that appears to have two phases of use. The base appears to be a Early Paleolithic tool with evidence for large flake removals off a core. One side is smooth while the other has c.20% cortext remaining and large flakes removed from around it. It was possibly produced using a crude form of the Levallois core tecnique and dates to the Lower or Middle Paleolithic (600,000 - 40,000 BC). The remaining cortext and related removals are heavily patinated with orange iron staining and show signs of water smoothing typical of tools of this age. In addition there are later flake …
