Copper alloy charm. A small cast naturalistically modelled figurine of a naked woman reclining supine with her right arm behind her head, her left by her side, and with rounded buttocks and the legs extended and lightly bowed at the knees. The face is simply modelled with an oversized nose, and the eyes and mouth perfunctorily rendered. The impression conveys a relaxation beyond that to be expected of a bathing belle, and approaches a post-coital abandon. The character is identified on its flat back by the legend JOAN/THE/WAD. Joan is the luck-bringing Queen of Cornish pixies and cons…

Silver charm, as kindly identified by the finder. A hollow sheet metal object in the form of a pointed slipper with a scaled surface on its upper and a smooth flat sole; fastenings are not represented though the front or vamp is high; the heel is lost. The surface texture was probably achieved with a stamp, and a former may also have been used to fashion the object. The thickness of the metal is comparable to that of other Victorian silverware reported. Suggested date: Post-Medieval to Modern, 1850-1950 Length: 16.3mm, With: 6.1mm, Height: 8mm, Thickness: 0.4mm, Weight: 0.63gms

A fragment of uncertain lead-alloy graffitied object, possibly an apotropaic/magic charm or talisman, dating to the medieval period. Description: The fragment is irregularly shaped with piecing at the top and rugged side making its original size and shape uncertain although the bottom has a recent break. Both faces have scratched lines, side A (left in the photographs) has a pair of line diagonal lines running from the top left corner with one turning right while the other terminates. From the centre of the right side is a set of lines which resemble the bow of a ship or a boat pos…

A medieval lead alloy pendant charm in the form of a draw string purse dating 14th - 15th century. Each side of the purse was cast separately from the same mould. The sides were then joined together by four spots of solder. The purse is decorated with a lattice pattern of quatrefoils, pierced overall to permit a glimpse of the contents. One tassel protrudes from the base, The remains of the draw strings dangle from the top corners but the ends are missing. At the top are two stubs that would have formed loops for suspension. The overall shape of this purse is slightly distorted…

White metal charm. Cast figurine representing a mermaid, with fishtail coiled up behind her rump, providing a loop as means of suspension. The figure has no arms, and somewhat unfeminine facial features, though these deficiencies are compensated for by long flowing hair and a pert bust of ample proportions. The lines of the hair are moulded though a small round punch has been used to render the scales on the tail and lower body. The lack of extensive patination tends to suggest a recent date. Suggested date: Modern, 1900-1950 Length: 28.7mm, Width: 11.8mm, Thickness: 5.5mm, Weigh…
