A Medieval iron axe head (10th - 13th century). The width of the axe head expands from the butt (width: 50.19mm) to the curved cutting edge (width: 88.57mm). The upper edge is straight but the lower edge curves downwards. In the centre on one side a makers mark has been stamped. The mark is a cross where the length is twice the width of the arms. It is arranged so that the long arm of the cross is aligned along the length of the axe head. The axe head is broken across the vertical perforation for attachment on the butt, ?broken in antiquity.
