An incomplete knapped and polished axe dating to the Neolithic period, c. 4000-2500 BC. The axe corresponds to Clough's (Clough et al 1979) type A, 'thick butted' pieces with oval/lenticular sections and broad butts. The axe was initially knapped in roughout form a piece of light greyish flint (now patinated to a deep mottled brown), and then ground to form a smooth, polished surface which covers almost the entire object. In plan view it is teardrop-shaped with a rounded and thinned butt which expands outwards to a convex cutting edge, while being broadly lenticular in section. Numero…

In plan one side is slightly convex while the other side is fairly straight, with slight facets. The blade is fairly straight and symmetrical and the body has traces fo polishing on each face. Following spectroradiometry by members of the project JADE team in France it was concluded that the axe belongged to the Chelles type and the source of the rock was Northern Italy. only around 120 Alpine axes have been found in Britain and Ire…

An incomplete knapped flint axe of Neolithic date, c. 4500-2500 BC. The axe fits into Clough's type B 'thin butted axes' (Clough et al. 1979), being sub-rectangular in plan view and sub-lenticular in section with a rounded off butt and slightly convex cutting edge. The axe was originally manufactured on a large flake of light greyish flint with large white inclusions, though excepting a small area at the very terminal end of the butt (where a small patch of cortex is also visible) and part of the cutting edge this has now patinated a rougher grey colour with light blue mottling and da…

A complete knapped flint flaked axe of Neolithic date, c. 4500-2500 BC. The axe fits into Clough's schema (see Clough et al. 1979) as a 'thin butted' example (his type B), but is notable in being of extremely large size when compared with most other examples. Manufactured originally on an extremely large flint flake of greyish colouration with large fossil inclusions, the axe has now patinated somewhat and now demonstrates a fairly consistent off-white character interspersed with patches of mottled blue, brownish yellow inclusions, and post-depositional iron/manganese staining. One si…

Neolithic polished stone axe fragment, 51mm long, 44mm wide and 14mm thick with a weight of 37.47grams. The fragment represents part of the blade end of an axe, but is very damaged with little original surface remaining. It has part of the curved blade which merges into the adjoining facetted edge, which has a thin angular face butting up to the rounded surface. The axe appears to be Langdale slate (fine grained tuff), so it could be part of a group VI axe.

Flint axe. Triangular flint with covering angled scalar retouch overall, producing a wide oval section with straight cutting edges along the arises where the two faces meet. One end is now flattened to form an angled butt, though whether this is a deliberate feature or an ancient break is uncertain. Dense white patina suggests the object endured a long period of exposure after its deposition. This object may be an edge polished axe. Suggested date: possibly Late Neolithic, 2700-2350 BC. Length: 68.1mm, Width: 40.6mm, Thickness: 22.4mm, Weight: 53.17gms.

A near complete but reworked knapped, ground and polished flint axehead of probable later Neolithic date (3000-2000 BC). The axe is knapped from a light grey coloured flint with a milky white coloured surface patina. There is considerable mid orange staining across the reworked surface and this is possibly as a result in the burial environment - possibly indicating deposition within soils that are iron rich or have a predilection towards iron panning / waterlogging. The axe is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and sub-oval (humped) in cross section. In plan the sides of the axe taper fr…
