Britannia metal pea whistle dating from the late 19th century; purpose unknown. Britannia metal is a pewter-type alloy favoured for its silvery appearance and smooth surface. The composition is approximately 93% tin, 5% antimony, and 2% copper. It was first produced in 1769 or 1770, under the name of "Vickers White Metal", by the Sheffield manufacturers Ebenezer Hancock and Richard Jessop (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Britannia_metal).

The tail is in the form of a caudal fin. At the opposite end there is a plain border on both faces, 3.9mm in width. 31.7 x 17.1 x 4.2mm. Weight: 5.49g. A similar incomplete whistle has been recorded from Berkshire: SUR-BEBF41.

Cast tin/lead-alloy or pewter whistle/rattle dating from the late modern period, i.e. c. AD1800-1900. The artefact is slightly bent and patinated but otherwise in good condition. The whistle is about 64mm long and is decorated with at least four round mouldings along its body. There are four cast loops on one moulding and two on another, probably small attachment loops for bells or other rattling equipment. Most of these whistle rattles are known to have been made in silver which would have probably been much healthier for baby and parents. This pewter or tin/lead-alloy whistle, howev…

A complete, cast probable lead/tin alloy (possibly pewter or tombac) whistle dating from the Post Medieval to early Modern period. The whistle consists of a pipe, circular in section, with a 'D' shaped performation mid way along the length. At the sound hole, half of the inner pipe is blocked to create the 'whistle' sound. The pipe leads to a hollow, broadly 'D' shaped sound box. A circular raised collar surrounds the pipe where it meets the sound box. A raised rib runs circumferentially around the sound box, with the hemisphere below it being rounded and that above more flattened. A …

Incomplete cast tin alloy hawking whistle, cylindrical in profile and circular in section, with two raised ribs which run around the circumference of the barrel of the whistle, on either side of the semi-circular sounding hole, which has since broken to form a larger aperture. A metal whistle in the form of a tobacco pipe, made of some form of pewter or lead-based alloy - probably the same material as was used to make cast metal soldiers and cars. The bowl is decorated with a band of loops each containing a pellet. Recent research shows that these apparent metal tobacco pipes were in fact toy whistles, probably of German origin and dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. The stem and a cover for the pipe were both of iron and thus have not survived in the ground. See David Higgins, Metal Pipes and Whistles, Society for Clay Pipe Research …
