A fragment of an unidentified object of unknown period, possibly modern. The object consists of a horn-shaped hollow cast segment of either tin, tin alloy or perhaps a thin sheet of lead alloy, with a resin-like material filling the inside of its hooked form. The moulded decoration on the outside of the object is formed of three consecutive tiers following the overall curved shape of the fragment. The style of the decoration seems to be similar to items in the Art Deco style of the early 20th century; however, this could be a coincidence. The metal is dark grey to chalky white in …

An incomplete copper alloy or tin alloy, unidentified object but probable fitting, of probably the Post Medieval to Modern period, dating from c. AD 1600 - AD 1900. The object is irregular in plan and rectangular in cross section, and is a symmetrical. The left side has a curved top with a rectangular depression about half way down, either side of the depression are two small rectangular protrusions. An incomplete tin alloy (probably) spoon bowl of probable post-medieval date. The spoon bowl is broadly mandolin-shaped but the back of the bowl towards the (missing) stem end widens, unlike Roman examples which have tenon joints (see Crummy 1988: 69-70 for Roman examples), although it may have transposed into a twisted stem/handle. There are illegible scratches within the bowl. The metal is very thin and overall does not appear to be of Roman date.

An globule of solidified molten casting waste. The object is irregular in form and section with no identifying features. The surface is dull silver. In the absence of metallurgical analysis it is unclear as to whether the metal is silver or another white metal such as tin. Conclusion Due to the undiagnostic nature of the find, it cannot be securely dated as being over 300 years old and as such would appear to fall outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996. Fragment of tin alloy object formed from a flat thin sheet with a smooth curved edge on one side, date unknown. The opposite edge is extremely jagged and bent where it has been broken off when the object was complete. The fragment appears to have a slight convex aspect which may suggest that it is from a spoon. Unfortunately, too little of the object now remains to be able to identify it with any degree of certainty. The fragment has a shiny grey patina with patchy corrosion. The dimensions of the object are: 37.34mm in length, 18.76mm in width, and 0.89mm in thickness. The weight of …

A near-complete cast tin alloy bead of unknown date. The bead is roughly circular in plan and sub-oval in section with external diameter of 13.6 and 8.5mm thick. The central perforation is warped but the side with less warpage has an internal diameter of 5.8mm x 3.9mm. The bead lacks diagnostic characteristics so a definite date cannot be obtained, however two tin beads are recorded from Medieval (15th century) contexts and examples are described by Egan and Pritchard (2002: 315-316 no. 1584, 1585). The metal is a medium grey and shiny in places with a weight of 4.17g. References…

A metal object, likely made of tin, of unknown function, likely dating to the late Post-Medieval to Modern era. Description: The object is a slim, elongated cone terminating at a point. It is hollow as far down as is visible. There is no visible thread within the object. The metal is unidentified but it is silver in colour so possibly tin. The surface is smooth with two incised grooves running around the circumference, one 4.4mm from the tip and the other at 26.11 mm from the tip. These are even and appear to have been created by a machine. The rest of the sur…

A probably silver plaited wire ring of unknown date, probably dating to 19th or 20th century.  The object is likely a sleeve or collar for a hunting whip. The wire of the ring is circular in cross section.  Dr Helen Geake suggests that these silver rings of unknown date should be recorded to further research their dating. She states "that at least some are from 16th- to 18th-century sword-grips, and others are certainly Early Medieval, either Anglo-Saxon (parallels on the Trewhiddle scourge) or Viking (parallels from Viking-age graves and hoards in Scandinavia, Ireland…

Object type: PIN
Broad period: ROMAN
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete and corroded pin head of Roman to Post Medieval date. The pin head is plain and sub-spherical in form with an integral thin pin-shaft protruding around 8mm from the base which terminates in an old break. The fragment is undiagnostic and can only be assigned a broad date range. There is no characteristic green colouration on the surface associated with copper alloy corrosion; where underlying metal is exposed it is grey in colour. Accordingly, the metal is most likely an alloy high in tin.

Silver-tin alloy strip which could be either a ring fragment or part of a strap end. The strip has been cast and appears to be a fragment of something. It could have been part of a ring which has been flattened or a decoration of a strapend (it is not heavy enough to be a strapend in itself). The strip is rectangular in plan and narrows slightly at one end. At the narrower end there is some decoration in relief. The decoration consists of a pointed rectangle. The long sides are normal but one end is pointed whilst at the other the lines curl round into two circles. This is possi…
