Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A probable Roman to Early Medieval mount dating to circa AD 43-1065. The object is cast in what looks like a high tin alloy. Its front face has rounded edges while it is flat on the reverse. It is comprised of a slightly raised broken arc with two outward projecting discs. Each disc has four regularly spaced apertures which give the appearance of a single expanding cross motif. There is some unclear decoration visible at the edge of the discs (possible small annulets). Two pellets project from the centre of the discs presumably used to mount the object. A possible similar object…

A fragment of a tinned Roman spoon, dating to the period AD 43-410. It consists of most of a leaf shaped bowl and part of the stem attached. The spoon weighs 3.94 grams. Overall the item is 56.61mm long, and 32.24mm at its widest. The fabric of the bowl is very thin at 0.85mm. There are fine lines or marks running from the top of the bowl (where the stem is attached) towards the bottom, on both sides, which may be due to manufacture or repeated cleaning. Near the top of the bowl, in line with the point at which the stem joins it, is a roughly rectangular perforation and below that …

An incomplete and corroded pin head of Roman to Post Medieval date. The pin head is plain and sub-spherical in form with an integral thin pin-shaft protruding around 8mm from the base which terminates in an old break. The fragment is undiagnostic and can only be assigned a broad date range. There is no characteristic green colouration on the surface associated with copper alloy corrosion; where underlying metal is exposed it is grey in colour. Accordingly, the metal is most likely an alloy high in tin.

Silver-tin alloy strip which could be either a ring fragment or part of a strap end. The strip has been cast and appears to be a fragment of something. It could have been part of a ring which has been flattened or a decoration of a strapend (it is not heavy enough to be a strapend in itself). The strip is rectangular in plan and narrows slightly at one end. At the narrower end there is some decoration in relief. The decoration consists of a pointed rectangle. The long sides are normal but one end is pointed whilst at the other the lines curl round into two circles. This is possi…

A worn fragment from a cast tin object seemingly depicting an anthropomorphic face. The 'eyes' are conjoining and heavily bordered. The 'nose' is triangular, while the 'mouth' is damaged. It is extremely difficult to accurately date such a fragment or to suggest an original context or use. The possibility exists that the face is more illusory than real. There are very slight traces on the reverse which hint at gilding.
