Two fragments of wall plaster of probable Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1700 – 1900. The fabric is buff coloured, hard and gritty with numerous variable organic inclusions. Striations on one surface of the larger fabric are suggestive of stucco; a render used as a decorative coating for walls and ceilings, exterior walls, and as a sculptural and artistic material in architecture. Fragment 1: 154.5mm x 112.4mm x 28.8mm; 495g. Fragment 2: 103.4mm x 74.3mm x 24.9mm; 189g.

Wall plaster. Three small fragments of a fine off-white wall plaster with thick matt paint of a mid green tint [two fragments – the smaller one with sparse quartz inclusions to length 3.5mm in the fabric] and a dull red [one fragment] on its outer side. The back of each fragment is smooth. The colours might derive from an internal decorative scheme involving bold colours as might be expected in a thoroughly Romanised setting. However, the fine fabric of the plaster under the paint, quite unlike the buff sandy fabric to be expected of a Roman render, its modest thickness [maximum …

A fragment of a Roman mosaic floor dating c. AD 100-400. The fragment is broadly rectangular in plan comprising a layer of white crystalline marble tesserae set in mortar with a section of opus signinum attached.  Nine tesserae remain; two are square; four are rectangular; two irregular pentagons and one irregular hexagon. They vary in size the largest measuring 15mm long x 15mm wide x 12.35mm thick and the smallest 12mm long x 11mm wide; the depth obscured by mortar. They are arranged in two lines containing four and three tesserae respectively that converge at a…

Plaster fragment. A small fragment of off-white plaster with frequent calcareous inclusions to length 4mm, locally burnt to a salmon pink tint. The pink tint is more noticeable on what may be a flat surface, though the object is too small to assert that any of its surfaces are original, let alone that this may have been exposed to a house fire. Similar material previously reported from the site was regarded as daub from a hearth or oven if not from walling. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410 Length: 29.8mm, Width: 27.5mm, Thickness: 13.4mm, Weight: 11.34gms

A small fragment of probably Roman wall plaster. It has a relatively soft white fabric with gritty inclusions, terminating in old breaks in all directions. The surface has been flattened, smoothed and painted with a red/pink (red ochre) with a small portion remaining. Whether this formed part of a main panel or a border between panels on a painted plaster surface is uncertain due to the preservation of the object.

A fragment of Roman (AD 43-410) ceramic building material and wall plaster. The fragment is irregularly shaped with uneven worn edges and comprises three fabrics in distinctive layers. The base layer (approximately 12mm maximum thickness) is a coarse porous mid-brown/grey mortar with scarce medium-sized white, black and brown inclusions throughout. Attached to the flat inside surface of this is a fine hard light-brown fabric (approx. 12-14mm thick). This has densely distributed small black, brown and grey inclusions as well as occasional white inclusions. One of the long edges h…

A complete but worn Bishop chess piece dating to the late 19th century or 20th century. The chess piece is cast out of plaster of Paris or crushed stone, and was probably dipped in resin. The surface has a mottled white matrix comprising irregular, frequent grains of a solid cream coloured substance. The chess piece has fine cracks all over, as well as holes in the base caused by air bubbles during the casting process. The perimeter of the base is also chipped as would be expected with a moulded piece. The Bishop is seated on an ornate chair. He wears a mitre decorated with a rib r…

A small fragment of plaster from the Roman period (AD43-410). The fragment is made up of a relatively hard white material with very small gritty inclusions. The surface has been flattened, smoothed and painted with a red ochre colour ( known as Pompeian Red), though the paint has crazed, it is still in a good condition. It is not certain if this fragment came from the main panel of a wall or part of a larger fresco. The fragment was found in an area that was known as part of Roman occupation, now known as Old Durham. However, much of the archaeological evidence has been quar…

Mortar and plaster building material. A thick [33mm] chunk of mortar, now of grey buff colour with abundant rounded flecks of black material to length 2mm [most smaller]. The finder kindly opines this to be stone whereas this reporter would rather see it as a thick render. The structure is open with voids between constituents and a crystalline appearance under low magnification; similar-looking black inclusions appear in pottery fabrics attributed to the Coal Measures of southern Yorkshire. The back is flat and smooth, but relief appears on the outer side, and the finder here discerns…
