County: Cornwall

Stone implement, from a baked sedimentary rock, or meta-sediment with quartz veins and mica (musovite) inclusions, which were probably 'recycled' when the rock metamorphosed (Roger Taylor pers comm). The implement is triangular in plan, with a curved, expanded end, and plano-convex in profile and section. The expanded end is flat on one side and curved on the other, which may just be a result of the pebble being shaped by the sand and sea, and not by hand. The sides of the object are damaged, and these appear to be recent, perhaps as a result of being knocked by the plough. This 'waist…

Object type: QUERN
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Fragment of a 'mustard' quern made from imported Rhenish lava. About a quarter survives; its diameter is c. 170 mm, it is c. 35 mm thick, and its central hole has a diameter of c. 40 mm. Probably an upper stone, its grinding surface is harp-dressed and the other surface is roughly pecked. 'Mustard' querns are mentioned in inventories and wills from the 17th century onwards and it is thought that these small querns are the ones referred to.
