A flat and incomplete leather object, 175mm in length, probably of post medieval date. The object comprises a strap which terminates in an oval loop with 41mm internal width. This has stitching around the inner and outer edges. The other end tapers to a break, and has stitching holes along both sides. There are also six stitching holes in two lines of three towards the looped end forming a reinforced attachment, suggesting this item was subject to regular tension stress during its use.

A fragile and incomplete leather object, 80mm in length. The object has been folded in half and is sub triangular in shape, being open along the convex edge. One side of this edge is notably thicker than the other and is turned up, with a row of large and heavy-duty stitch holes of lenticular shape and up to 1.8mm in length; these continue around the corner and along the short open end. There is no evident decoration. Possibly part of a knife sheath or perhaps more likely (given the stitching pattern) the vamp from a shoe. The lack of decoration makes dating problematic, but…

Lead alloy pencil end. Hollow-cast lead alloy top from the end of a pencil, as kindly identified by Gary Crace. Gary comments: 'This is a late Victorian pencil topper. It is modelled on Fred Archer a champion jockey of 1870/80s'.  The pencil topper is in the form of a naturalistically modelled head of a clean-shaven and short-haired jockey wearing a peaked cap and a stiff upright vertically lined collar with a diagonally sloping edging. The cap is divided into segments, either quarters or eighths, corresponding to the parti-coloured design of a racing strip. These obj…

A group of fragments from two modern shoes, probably dating to c. AD 1800-1900. Two of the fragments may have originally been joined, the other two are different, and seem likely to represent a second or possibly third individual shoe. Three of the four pieces bear iron nails ringing their perimeter. The two adjoining pieces have smaller round headed nails, while the third piece has more squared off nails and is more rectangular in size. The third fragment bears no nails and is warped and damaged. There are skeuomorphic patches of green on the brownish leather of the soles, which…

An incomplete leather shoe upper (quarter) of uncertain date, but possibly Post Medieval (c.1600-1900). The piece forms the heel and sides of the shoe, with a single line of stitch marks along the seams with the sole and the vamp. The left side is longer than the right and the end is missing. The vamp stitch marks on the right side may therefore indicate a repair or modification to the shoe. Unstratified leather shoes are difficult to date. For comparative items see D. Friendship-Taylor in JP Allan 1984, 'Medieval and Post-Medieval Finds from Exeter'. Min width: 35mm M…

A deep crease from the left edge may be evidence of use wear. Unstratified leather shoes are difficult to date. For comparative items see D. A leather shoe upper, or vamp, possibly of Post Medieval date (c.1600-1800). The toe is rounded, and its shape suggests it was for the right foot. Where the vamp joined the quarters is a double and parallel line of stitch holes, with a single line of stitch holes following the cut-out section across the bridge of the foot. A deep crease on the right side and a continuous crease from right to left across the bridge, are evidence of use wear. Damage, including a hole in the centre of the bridge and creases at the toe, may be historic. Unstratified leather shoes are difficult to d…

A leather upper, probably from a clog of post Medieval to modern date. The upper has three parallel rows of holes around the insole; the outer two may have been for stitching, but the inner retains three small steel nails which project to over 7mm in length, suggesting the upper was nailed to a very thick, most likely wooden sole. The nails are of steel and machine-made form suggesting a 19th century date for the shoe. The outer margin of the upper has a decorative border comprised of two rows of parallel indentations or holes; at either end of this border…

A child's leather shoe with a sole 52mm wide at the ball of the foot and around 17cm in length. There are two lines of small nails around the edge of the underside of the sole which secure it to the other parts of the shoe. The heel is made of five stacked layers of leather, held together by small nails. The uppers come up to ankle height and are stitched to the insole, with ten lace holes with small copper alloy eyelets. The shoe is in very poor condition and likely well worn at the point of deposition. It is approximately a UK child size 10, suggesting that the owner would have b…

A near complete worn Post-Medieval leather shoe. Description: It is of welt construction, where a strip of leather (welt) is stitched to an upper and insole of the shoe. The sole is then attached to it. The shoe has a rounded toe and the two piece upper is plain in design. There are stitch holes in the sole and welt. The sole remains attached to the insole and in fact looks like it was attached prior to the addition of the welt. A probably late medieval/early post-medieval (c. AD1400-1600) incomplete leather strap, with 2 lead alloy sexfoil mounts still in situ. One end of the leather is broken and missing, therefore the original length of the strap and its terminals is unknown. At the front, each mount has three domed circular lobes, decorated with raised cross-hatching or 'brambling', alternate with three circular hollow lobes, and a central 3mm diameter piercing. The mounts are connected to the leather strap at 42mm centres by an integral tube fixed in place by stamping. It is likely the mounts functioned …

A latchet fastening shoe with a pointed toed vamp and long quarters, tying across the instep through a single pair of lace holes in a pair of narrow latchets. The sole does not appear to have had a heel. The shoe also appears to be straight, that is made neither for the left or the right foot. The shoe is likely to date to around the first quarter of the 19th century. Report from Quita Mould, examined only from photograph, with thanks.

A closed tab, front lacing boot dating to the first quarter of the 19th century. The lace holes do not have metal eyelets. The upper comprises a vamp and quarters. I can't see the construction but it is likely to be of welted construction, it seems to have no heel as such but only a top piece. The half sole and top piece have hobnails around the edge but also a row running up the middle, with a group reinforcing the toe. Some of the hobnails have thick, square heads (which I have not come across before). I think they are of a style known at the time as a laced half boot or a 'high-low…
