A possible cannon ball made from cast iron. It is spherical and is 40.08mm diameter. It weighs 216g (7 ¾ ozs). The surface of the ball is corroded and flaking. A cannon ball weighing 8ozs was fired from a Robinet cannon, which the recorded example may be. These type of cannons were used in the 17th century (Blackmore 1990 Arms and Armour of the English Civil Wars, Royal Armouries p. 83).

An iron horse or oxen shoe. The shoe is likely to date from the late medieval period, but could be early post-medieval in date. Only part of the shoe survives, suggesting that it could be a part shoe (made in two halves for a cloven-hoof animal such as oxen. Three small countersunk nail holes remain, but no nails. The shoe has a slightly sinuous edge (curvy).

A corroded iron key of probable post-medieval date. The dating of large door keys, such as this piece, is problematic since their form changed very little over a long period of time. Bailey illustrates several keys of similar form, in his book "Detector finds 5" (2002; pp. 51-52), which he suggests are of 15th to 16th century date. Whilst the evidence certainly seems to indicate that keys with internal projections in the bow are post-medieval in date, the discovery of a similar example found in an 18th century context in Southampton (C. Platt and R. Coleman-Smith; 1975; pp. 291, no. 2…

An iron single-loop buckle. Evidence from London and elsewhere suggests that this form of buckle may be of late medieval date (G. Egan and F. Pritchard; 1991; pp. 103). Apart from the pin, the buckle is of one piece construction. The frame is D-shaped in plan and has narrow sides. The axis bar has flat faces and a central recess around which the tapering iron pin is wound. There is no plate, but instead, a framed rectangular void through which the leather belt would originally have been looped. The buckle measures 44.9mm long, 41mm wide and 8.9mm thick. The weight is 18.89g.

Wrought copper alloy needle of probable later medieval or early post-medieval date (1400-1600). The needle is very badly corroded and is broadly rectangular in plan with a square cross-section. It measures 89.2mm in length, 2.1mm width, is 2.2mm thick and weighs 1.57 grams. The head of the needle is broken but seems to thicken and the upper broken edge is bent back upon itself to form (a now incomplete) loop. The flaring has been produced by the end being hammered to form a wider flattened surface. The opposite tip or point of the needle has been formed by cutting the shaft at a 45 deg…

Object type: CANNON BALL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast iron Post Medieval cannon ball with prominent middle seam. The ball has a diameter of 3.2 inches (81.3mm), a circumference of 10 inches (255mm) and weighs 4.5-4 lbs (1.5-1.82 Kg). The ball would have been used as ammunition for a 'Minion' or more probably a 'Saker' cannon, both of which were in common usage during the English Civil War. The Saker for example had a calibre of 3.25 inches with a barrel approximately 9.5 ft (2.9m) long. It had a range approaching 7400 ft (2.3 km) but was used to bounce shot along the ground to cause as much damage as possible. Circa 1650 AD.

A probable draw knife made of iron. Only the blade survives; the tangs look to have been snapped off. The blade is 161.5mm long and 23.8mm wide. It seems to be double edged and has a thick central rib. In section it is shaped like a lozenge with concave sides. It is 11.4mm thick at the thickest part of the mid rib. The rib continues to the far extent of both ends, suggesting that the rib extended to form tangs, now missing, at both ends, meaning the tool had two handles. Two such double handed tools are draw knifes and spoke shaves. The iron is corroded but stable. No archaeological pa…

A Post-Medieval iron knife with ivory handle and copper alloy plate between the handle and the blade (early – mid 16th century). The iron blade has a whittle tang that is central on the blade. There is a cutler’s stamp on the blade: on the x-ray the stamp appears to have a different metal in-laid. The stamp appears to comprise two curving lines that intersect; Geoff Egan suggests it may be a crozier. The handle expands towards the butt with an oval cross-section and it is decorated on both sides with two parallel grooves that extend the length of the handle. The ivory hand…
