Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Surrey
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint axehead of Neolithic date, 133mm in length, struck from a mottled grey flint and bifacially worked. The axehead is symmetrical on two axes and has a lenticular cross section, flaring smoothly to a rounded cutting edge 58.7mm wide. A retouched flint flake of suggested middle Neolithic to early Bronze Age date c. 3300-1000 BC.  The secondary flake is elongated and sub-triangular in plan and cross-section; a small section of cortex surviving at the distal edge which has a chip at the terminal with fresh breaks suggesting more recent damage. The ventral surface is slightly concave with a pronounced bulb of percussion and raised rippling suggested hard hammer working. The dorsal surface has five removal scars with crude removals at the proximal end, possibly damage, but some finer …

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete retouched blade of probable Neolithic date, made from a light grey-brown flint. Only the proximal end remains; this has short abrupt scaled retouch down one or possibly both sides, perhaps suggesting that original tool was a backed blade or side scraper. The blub of percussion has been reduced on the ventral surface with long, low angle retouch.

Object type: ASSEMBLAGE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A large flint assemblage of later Mesolithic date, probably representing blade and microlith production. The assemblage comprises: 7 complete and incomplete microliths, all with short abrupt retouch along one or both sides and ranging in length from 9.9mm to 22.6mm. Size and form suggest a later Mesolithic date. Identifiable types include: an obliquely blunted scalene triangle and a curved point with retouch to one side of the base, possibly another incomplete obliquely blunted scalene triangle (Clark Group A; Jacobi 1a)); 4 backed or rod types (Clark Group B; Jacobi …

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: North Yorkshire

A curved flint blade of probable Bronze Age date, 53.8mm in length and struck from a secondary flake of grey flint. The distal end has been worked into a triangular point with short semi-abrupt retouch on both sides. The flake has cortex on both faces at the proximal end suggesting that it derived from a nodule with a thick cortical layer.

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small flint tabular bladelet core of later prehistoric / Bronze Age date struck from a grey flint with white patination / re-cortication from deposition in calcareous sediments. There appears to be a single striking platform, with parallel removal scars around approximately half of the circumference. Some of these are partially patinated and some break the patination, suggesting several phases of use and re-use.

Pale grey flint with cortex, oblique or transverse arrowhead. A thin triangular flake of undulating profile with short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect following two converging edges, and along part of the third side. The ventral surface is gently rippled. Suggested date: Late Neolithic, 2500-2350 BC Length: 18.4mm, Width: 20.9mm, Thickness: 2.2mm, Weight: 1.12gms

Pale grey flint debitage fragment. A narrow straight-sided flake with long narrow flakes struck from its dorsal side and with an undulating ventral surface; a white patina has developed over struck surfaces suggesting the object has endured exposure to a calcareous environment. Chips a either end reveal the original tint of the flint, which is probably from the Lincolnshire Wolds. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC Length: 23.6mm, Width: 10.2mm, Thickness: 3.7mm, Weight: 1.02gms

Dark grey-brown flint blade. A thick sub-triangular flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulbar ventral surface with smaller flakes struck by hard hammer working from the ventral aspect. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one long straight edge, possibly forming a knife on whose cutting edge pressure might be brought to bear with the user’s thumb resting in the dorsal concave surface. Dark brownish flint seems associated with early and skilful flint-working in our region. The edges are so fresh as to suggest the recent dist…

A large flint blade core of later mesolithic date with a single striking platform, struck from a dark brown flint. The core is triangular in shape with parallel removal scars around half of its circumference. A patch of grey-brown cortex remains down one side. The other has a single large removal scar with battering damage and small flaked removals around the edge, running off it one side perpendicular to the striking platform and partially overlying it. This suggests a secondary use for the core, possibly as a hammer.
