Record ID: LANCUM-825D97
Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lithic implement, probably a knife or scraper. It was knapped from light grey speckled flint and is hardly patinated. The dorsal face shows several large facets while the ventral face shows numerous waves/ripples. There are retouch marks forming a very ragged edge all around the edges on both the ventral and dorsal faces, although they are slightly more pronounced on the dorsal face.

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Mesolithic or Neolithic blade. Knapped from good quality dark brown-black flint. There is a flat area of cortex at the proximal end, which was utilised as a striking platform. There is a bulb of percussion on the ventral surface, with impact ripples radiating down the length of the ventral surface. The dorsal surface has two parallel ridges along its length. There is a hinged termination just before the distal end on both the dorsal and ventral surface. These hinged terminations resulted in the incomplete flaking of the surface, thus leaving natural cortex covering the distal end. Ther…

Object type: SIDE SCRAPER
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Late Neolithic or Bronze Age side scraper. Knapped from good quality dark black flint. The proximal end has a prepared striking platform, with a point of impact, bulb of percussion and impact ripples on the ventral surface. Approximately 50% of the dorsal surface is covered in a natural cream coloured cortex, which extends and covers one lateral edge of the scraper. The other lateral edge has been retouched with abrupt and semi-abrupt removals which extends around the distal end to form a curved scraping edge. The scraper is 45.30mm long, 32.06mm wide and 12.06mm thick at the proximal …

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Waste flake of good quality dark brown-black flint. The flake has evidence of platform preporation, There is a large bulb of percussion with some scaring on the proximal end of the ventral surface. The dorsal surface has scaring at the proximal end where previous flakes have been removed. The edges of the flake are damaged, most likely from post-depositional activity in the plough soil. The flake is 24.19mm long, 26.38mm wide and is 6.66mm thick across the bulb of percussion. It weighs 4.35 grams.

Waste flake knapped from good quality dark brown-black flint. The flint is semi-transparent where it is a slightly lighter brown in colour. There is a small bulb of percussion on the proximal end, with impact ripples extending down the complete length of the ventral surface to the distal end. There is scaring on the dorsal surface where a previous flake had been removed. One edge of the flake is covered in a natural mid-brown cortex. There is possibly some abrupt retouch on the distal end, however this may be damge from post-depositional activity on the plough soil. The flake is 46.73m…

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint leaf-shaped arrowhead of Late Neolithic date. Light grey-brown flint patinated to almost completely white with small patches of iron staining and a mid gloss surface. The arrowhead is roughly lozenge-shaped and is pressure flaked around the edges on both faces. The dorsal face retains traces of larger flaking scars and waves of percussion can be seen ventrally. The proximal point is slightly thickened over where the bulb of percussion would be. There is a small amount of recent damage along the edges. This is a fairly coarsely made example of such arrowheads. Date: Late Neolithi…

Object type: PICK
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: City of Southampton
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint pick of Mesolithic (or early Neolithic) date, rolled and polished by water action. Both faces are bevelled, but one in a more definite triangular cross-section. There are removals all over the surface of the pick; no cortex is present. The butt is oblique while the cutting end is now rounded due to wear. Both longitudinal edges have been 'battered', a common feature on implements of this type. The light grey flint has become weathered, and in many areas has taken on yellow and orange hues from iron staining.

A complete flint axe of Neolithic date (4500 BC – 2000 BC). The implement is a mixture of light grey and weathered white on its surface. It is symmetrical in plan, with slightly serpentine edges when viewed from the side; the longitudinal edges have been slightly 'battered'. In cross-section the axe is sub-lozengiform. In plan, the butt is evenly curved, as is the cutting edge which is also semi-circular. One face is less worked towards the butt end; there is a stop beyond this ridge which corresponds with a depression on the other surface. On this same face there is a relatively u…
