A mottled dark grey piece of flint, pano convex in profile. The dorsal face, medial to proximal appears to be damaged with some retouching having occurred. The right margin is a serated edge (distal to proximal), with the proximal end appearing to be broken, sharp edges remaining on the right side. The serated edge also appears to have a small amount of damage in the medial area, The left margin provides some indicaitons of retouch or hammer damage, with a small notch between the proximal and medial on the left margin. The left margin distal end of the dorsal face, appears to have …

Toffee coloured semi-translucent Flint with cortex, serrated implement. Elongated plano-convex tapered flake of good quality non-local flint or chert with two elongated and one oblique flake removal scars on one side, producing an angular section. A strip of thick creamy cortex has been deliberately left in place along one face of the convex side, and the long sharp edge opposite it has been very finely denticulated by pressure flaking with a fine point, perhaps the end of an antler tine. Chips at either end of the object are probably adventitious damage, though it is uncertain at wha…

Pale grey flint serrated implement. Bladelet with four long parallel flakes removed from its dorsal side, its end bevelled, and slightly curved on the ventral side. Short abrupt retouch, unusually executed from the ventral aspect, follows one straight edge to confer a finely serrated cutting edge; a lesser degree of apparent retouch on the opposite edge is probably fortuitous damage. The lack of patina may suggest this object was incorporated into a sealed context shortly after its deposition. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. A flint possible serrated implement dating from the Early Neolithic period (about 4000 - 3300 BC). It is formed on a the proximal end of a secondary blade of mottled light grey flint, with cortex at the proximal end. The flint has a partial speckled patina. It is sub-rectangular, truncated at the distal end and triangular in section. The right side has short, abrupt, sub-parallel retouch forming a serrated edge. There are about 5 teeth per centimeter, but they are irregular, casting doubt on the identification. The flint is 25.2mm long, 20mm wide and 3.5mm thick. 1.79g.

Record ID: NLM-D162D0
Object type: SERRATED IMPLEMENT
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Grey buff flint of good quality with cortex at one end, serrated implement. Long flake with long parallel flakes struck from the dorsal side and slightly concave and rippled on the ventral. Very fine serrations down one long edge, better felt than observed, were produced by very short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect. The opposite edge is flat, perhaps permitting the exertion of pressure. The lack of patina may indicate this object was incorporated into a sealed context shortly after its deposition. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. Length: 32.9mm, Width…

Grey-buff flint of good quality serrated implement. Long flake with long thin parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side, alnmost flat on the ventral. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one long edge, producing a serrated cutting edge so fine it is more easily felt than observed. The opposite edge is flat, probably to permit the exertion of pressure. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. Length: 26.3mm, Width: 10.4mm, Thickness: 3.9mm, Weight: 0.94gms.

Grey flint with slight patches of misty patina, serrated implement. Long flake with long parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and very faintly rippled on the ventral. Very fine short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal side follows one long edge and, possibly as a separate episode, one end of the opposite edge, producing a serrated edge so fine it is more easily felt than seen. The tip is perhaps lost at an oblique and probably recent break. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000- BC. Length: 30.0mm, Width: 10.9mm, Thickness: 3.1mm, Weight: 1.14gms.

Grey flint with cortex and misty white patina, serrated implement. Long flake with long parallel flakes removed from the dorsal side and a small bulb at one end of a slightly concave ventral surface. Very short abrupt retouch along one side may indicate an initial use as a serrated implement; what cortex remains is on the opposite edge, and would have permitted pressure to be exerted. Patina extends over the serrated edge. A subsequent episode of very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect trimmed part of this cortex and removed the patina associated with the original wo…

Pale rose grey flint with misty patina serrated implement. Small flake with parallel flakes trimmed from its dorsal side and a bulb on the ventral. Vary short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one straight edge, and disrupts patina here. Both the patination and re-use of an item of debitage could be accommodated within te Late Mesolithic. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. Length: 21.2mm, Width: 10.6mm, Thickness: 3.3mm, Weight: 0.65gms.

Grey flint with misty white patina serrated implement. A fragment of debitage with long thin parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and a small bulb on the ventral. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the straight long edge, formed a serrated edge so fine it is more easily felt than observed, and this edge subsequently accumulated patina. The patina is removed by very short abrupt retouch along the curved edge, illustrating the re-use of an old tool. The lack of subsequent patina may suggest the object was incorporated into a sealed context shortly…
