Record ID: GAT-64D580
Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Gwynedd
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A scatter of flints found in 1998. According to the finder they were found on the seaward side of a field wall near Ogof Llwyd, at Penrhyn, east of Aberdaron. They comprise 10 small flakes and blades, some of which may have been formed by natural processes. The majority are broken and may be waste flakes left as the result of knapping. Due to the occurrences of cortex in relation to flake size, it is likely that the flakes are the result of working pebbles.

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Isle of Anglesey
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two pieces of flint found together. The first is likely to be imported flint and represents a flake from tool production. It is broken and the break is heavily patenated suggesting the break is ancient. It is possible that the flake represents a distal scraper snapped off in use. Later neolithic. The second piece is an irregular pebble, no sign of deliberate working, probably glacial deposition. Natural.

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Isle of Anglesey
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Orange-brown-coloured flint blade, with a minimum of three earlier blade removals visible on the dorsal face. The bulb of percussion is clearly visible on the ventral face, as are ripples running conversely across the length of this face. It has been truncated at the point of percussion: this is known to have taken place since it was found, roughly 20 years ago. Similarly, there may be some retouch along the edges of the blade, although this may have also been caused by damage since its discovery.

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Gwynedd
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Retouched flint blade removed from a prepared core, of whitish-grey flint. The blade, manufactured from a secondary flake, has largely unifacial direct semi-abrupt retouch along both lengths, and a point has been created at the promixal end to the extent that the bulb of percussion is barely discernable. The dorsal face of the blade has a minimum of five negative scars, two of which show a hinged termination. The original colour of the blade was most likely to have a been dark-grey, and exposure to the elements has resulted in the present whitish-grey appearance.

Waste greyish-brown secondary flake with a pronounced dorsal ridge and which retains some cortex to the distal end. The ventral face shows a small bulb scar at the distal end whilst ripples emanate from the striking platform at the proximal end suggesting that the core from which it was taken was struck from either end during preparation. Finely-worked arrowhead made from pale brown-grey flint. The arrowhead is triangular in shape and has been bifacially worked. It does not appear to be tanged or barbed, although the base is slightly hollowed. The point has broken off. The arrowhead appears to have been finished using the ‘pressure-flaking’ technique and there is some evidence of retouch around the edges. It is difficult to confidently classify the type of object due to the damage it has suffered, and it is unclear whether all the flake removals currently visible are the result of human action or burning. The flake has a chipped ventral face. The chip is close to the bulb of percussion and may be a result of burning. Flint core, probably Neolithic, from a small nodule of flint. Cortex is present on two sides of the core, and several blade removals are visible. The flint is dark grey in colour, and has been chipped on every angle, presumably from the action of knocking against pebbles on the stony beach at Porth Dinllaen. Nodules of flint were brought to this area from elsewhere. Therefore this core is probably Neolithic (as opposed to Mesolithic) in date, because items were more likely to have been transported around at this time. However the possibility that the core is Mesolithic should…

Notched/Spurred piece Made on an irregularly fractured fragment of poor quality light grey cherty flint, 34mm long, 35mm wide and 12mm thick. A notch has been created on one edge by a single steep flake removal. The inside of the notch has then been shaped by fine retouch. There are no visible signs of use wear in the notch. Removal of the notch has also created a ‘spur’ at one side which has some possible use edge chipping. This is rather irregular and not really a good diagnostic piece on its own but both notched and spurred pieces are typically found in Late Neolithic asse…

The gunflint is a dark grey in colour and trapezoidal in plan and in section. The dorsal face is very flat representing one large facet with a small concave scar at one edge probably the result of later damage. The wider 'striking' edge of the flint has been trimmed by short, abrupt scaled retouch carried out from the ventral face to produce the striking surface. There appears to be some minor evidence of battering along this edge suggesting light use before loss or discard. Semi-prismatic core. The flint is generally a mid-grey in colour, but one face appears to have developed a slight white patina suggesting this may have been an original 'natural' surface of the flint pebble prior to working. The other face has areas of rusty brown staining which may be iron oxide deposits from the soil. The flint has been subjected to neat, regular single direction flaking in order to produce parallel-sided flakes or blades. Discussion: The core appears to have been designed to produce blades so it is probably Mesolithic or Neolithic in origin. In shape it is ver…

A flint blade of prehistoric date, potentially dating to the late Neolithic period. The find appears to be a tertiary flake with no traces of cortex on the dorsal face. On the ventral face it is possible to identify the platform; a potential bulb scar and bulb, while a number of ripples can be seen running from the proximal to distal end. Looking at the ventral face, orientated with the distal top and proximal bottom, it is apparent that the blade bears evidence of working along the left edge, while the opposing right edge may show evidence of a more recent break.
