Record ID: CORN-228052
Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint leaf-shaped arrowhead, lozenge-shaped in plan, profile and triangular in section. The arrowhead has been worked on all margins of the dorsal face, but has been more extensively worked towards the distal end, particularly along the left margin. The proximal end has been waisted to be better used for hafting, and has been broken off above the bulb of percussion, on the ventral face. The flint is a grey brown colour and translucent, and was probably knapped from a local beach pebble. The length to breadth ratio is about 3:2. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar example on page 14…

Flint snapped end scraper, semi-circular in plan, triangular in section and trapezoidal in profile. The distal end and both sides of the dorsal face have been unimarignally retouched. The scraper may have been broken through use if enough pressure was applied to shear it off from the other half that was still held in the haft. Alternatively, it may have been broken since being deposited through coming into contact with agricultural machinery. See CORN-227708 and CORN-24A3D6 for similar examples from this site, which suggests that this may have been a more common occurance, as this i…

Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint backed side scraper, semi-circular in plan and trapezoidal in profile and section. The scraper has been unifacially reworked on the right edge of the dorsal face, from the distal to the proximal end, and naturally truncated on the left edge where cortex remains from the original edge of the flint pebble. The ventral face retains the bulb of percussion at the proximal end. The flint is a mottled light grey to brown colour, made from a local beach pebble, with the orignal cortex remaining along the left edge of the dorsal face, from the distal to the proximal end. The length to …

Flint waisted end and side scraper, almost oval in plan, trapezoidal in profile and triangular in section. The distal end and the lateral margins have been unimarginally retouched on the dorsal face. The proximal end has been snapped off at the base of the bulb of percussion. The flint is a mottled light to dark grey colour, probably made from a local beach pebble. There is a thin sliver of cortex running from the medial ridge to the left edge of the dorsal face at the distal end, suggesting that the scraper was made from a secondary flake. The length to breadth ratio is almost 6:5…

Flint borer or piercer, with the spurred end to the left side of the distal end, looking at the dorsal face. The borer is 'P'-shaped in plan, lozenge-shaped in section and triangular in profile. The borer has been unimarginally retouched on the left margin of the dorsal face, to create the spur, and the left margin of the ventral face, on the other side of the spur. There is also some retouch at the base of the right margin of the dorsal face, towards the proximal end. The flint is a mottled light grey to white colour, with some iron staining on the both faces, and the length to bre…

Flint thumbnail scraper, almost circular in plan, lozenge-shaped in profile, and semi-circular in section. The distal end and lateral margins have been unimarginally retouched on the dorsal face. The proximal end has been snapped off at the base of the bulb of percussion. The flint is a mottled dark grey colour with white specs, probably made from a local beach pebble. The length to breadth ratio is 1:1. Bond illustrates a similar example on page 145, Fig.5.131, No.6, which is dated to the Beaker period, and another on page 154, Fig.5.138, No.4, which is dated to the Bronze Age.

Flint end and side scraper, almost triangular in plan, rectangular in profile and lozenge-shaped in section. The proximal end and the left lateral margin have been unimarginally retouched on the dorsal face. The left margin of the ventral face has also been retouched, towards the distal end. This edge is notched and may have been used as a graver. The distal end has been created by a curved hinge-fracture which makes it look folded. The proximal end has been snapped off at the base of the bulb of percussion. The flint is a mottled light grey to white colour, probably made from a lo…

Object type: LITHIC CORE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint single-platform microlith blade core, sub-rectangular in plan, oval in section and square in profile. The core has had blades taken off of it on three quarters of the way around its central axis, with a layer of cortex running from about half of the edge of the platform in an arc down to the base of the core. The flint is a translucent grey-brown colour and the curvature of the core suggests that it was made from a local beach pebble. The length to breadth ratio is almost 5:4, which is usual for micro-cores. Bond (2004) illustrates similar examples on page 120, Fig.5.104, N…
