Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete flint end scraper of probable Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. The scraper has been made from a tertiary flake. At the proximal end are the striking platform and bulb of percussion. Ripples radiate down the ventral surface and there are a number of flaking scars on the dorsal surface. The distal end has been retouched, although part of this has broken off. The resulting notch reflects damage rather than deliberate working. The dark brown flint has a mid-gloss patina.

The dorsal face (the face with the most scars) has retouch around the side and lower edges, the base of the drop shape. The retouch is formed by long, narrow parallel negative scars. The angle of the retouch is c. 60 degrees. The ventral face (smooth face) has no retouch, but has bulbar scars as well as the bulb and concentric rings. The scraper, with the striking platform at the top, is 36.98mm long and is 28.64mm wide. It weighs 10.6g.
