Flint saw made from a grey flint with cream banding. It is sub-rectangular in plan, sub-triangular in profile and section. There is no cortex, so it is classed as Tertiary. On the dorsal face the left margin has a serrated edge produced by short, semi-abrupt retouch. The distal end also shows retouch. The right margin is uneven, probably damaged. The proximal end is truncated. Mercer (1981) shows a similar, truncated, serrated-edge flake on page 143, Figure 63, diagram L206.

Dark grey-brown flint with surface iron staining. Irregular flake with rough hard hammer working, limited pressure flaking retouch as well as probably recent damage on its edges, all producing a crudely saw toothed edge, and a limited zone of more delicate pressure-flaked retouch on striking platform. Suggested date: Later Neolithic, 2500-2100 BC. Length: 75.42mm, Width: 45mm, Thickness: 14.6mm, Weight: 47.73gms.

Grey flint blade, sub-rectangular in plan, section and profile. No cortex is visible so it is classed as Tertiary. On the dorsal face both margins show short, semi-abrupt retouch and have serrated edges. the distal end is straight and sharp. The ventral face has possible fine retouch on the right margin towards the distal end. Mercer (1981) shows a similar, serrated-edge flake on page 143 , Figure 63, Diagram L198.

Flint with unusual light tan striations of colour which has been truncated and squared off at both ends. Square in shape with retouch on all four sides. The serrated edge means the piece could have been used as a saw but it could also be described as a scraper. There is no sign of heat or burning nor any remains of cortex The flint is almost translucent and has a light brown colour and was likely derived from local beach pebble. R Mercer [1981] illustrates examples on page 133, fig 58 No. L137 and on page 143, fig 63, No. L202 which are dated from the early Neolithic.

Flint saw/piercer combination tool, oblong in plan and triangular in section. On the dorsal side the proximal end is snapped and the left margin and distal end denticulated. The left distal tip is also retouched into a point. The right margin finely serrated. On the ventral side the right margin has been retouched which corresponds to the left dorsal side. It is translucent pale grey cream in colour with a tertiary cortex. Butler (2005) illustrates a similar example on page 133, Fig. 56, No. 2 which is dated to the Neolithic period.

Flint saw on a blade that is sub-rectangular in plan, convex-concave in profile and sub-rectangular in section. On the dorsal face, the right margin has a serrated edge created by fine retouch. The left margin has backing. On the ventral face there are fine serrations on the right margin. It is a pale grey flint with cortex on the distal and proximal ends. The cortex is secondary and it is likely that this has derived from a local beach pebble. Bond (2004) shows a similar saw on page 143, Figure 5.129, Number F149.

Flint saw, sub-rectangular in plan and profile, sub-triangular in section. On the dorsal face, there is fine retouch along both edges, creating serration. The proximal end has been retouched. The flint is black with small white patches. There is secondary cortex, which is rough so may indicate a nodular origin. It is possible that the flint came from Beer Head. Bond (2004) shows a similar saw on page 143, Figure 5.129, Number 149.

Flint, mid-grey translucent Good quality flint flake with a small bulb of percussion at one end, small patches of cortex at both ends, and a long blade-removal scar, and further flake removal scars parallel to it between these ends. The latter two edges have been finely reworked by pressure-flaking to produce parallel saw blades, which remain functionally sharp. Suggested date: early Neolithic. Pale grey translucent Flint of high quality. Flint saw fragment. Knapped sub-triangular flake bearing three long parallel flake removal scars on its dorsal aspect. One end is broken, probably recently, and one side edge bears fine tiny pressure flaked denticulations forming a serrated cutting blade. The selection of excellent material and its assured working suggest an Early Neolithic date, while its fresh condition hints at recent disturbance from a sealed context. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Length: 19mm, Width: 18.4mm, Thickness: 4.2mm, Weight: 1.51gms.

Flint flake which has serrated edge at distal, dorsal view; could be described as a saw. This serration is along edge from the distal end. There are signs that the flake had possibly snapped as seen at left hand edge, dorsal view. There is a little cortex remaining along the edge on dorsal side. No signs of burning. The flint is of a mottled mid grey colour and was likely derived from a local beach pebble. Bond [2004] illustrates a similar example on page 61, Fig 5.39, No.L101 which is dated to the Neolithic.

This is a blade which may have been used as a saw. The dorsal face has a flattened medial ridge from which flakes have been removed towards the both margins. The right margin is "nibbled", while the left lower margin from mesial to proximal is more obviously serrated. This has been achieved withshallow abrupt retouch from the ventral face. The distal left shoulder also shows retouch from the ventral face, while the right shoulder has been snapped. The flint is dark grey with light grey and cream flecks and was possibly derived from a beach pebble. The whole piece is vry glossy and …

Flint saw, P-shaped in plan, rectangular in profile and triangular in section. There is retouch on the left margin of the dorsal face, creating the serrated edge used for sawing, and the right margin is backed for handling. The proximal end is smooth and there is a layer of cortex remaining on the distal end, suggesting that this is a primary flake. The colour of the flint is a mottled grey-brown colour which suggests that it has probably been derived from a local beach pebble. The orangey discolouration around the proximal end and on the cortex is organic staining from peat. Bond (…

Grey translucent flint of high quality. Flint saw. Long flake of triangular section and curved in profile produced by the removal of two long flakes from its dorsal aspect and the subsequent detaching of flake from core. Retouch includes the very fine pressure flaked denticulation of both long edges of the flake to create finely serrated edges. To permit its use, the blade may have been hafted; its strenuous use would seem difficult with the opposed edges simultaneously sharp. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Length: 28mm, Width: 8.6mm, Thickness: 3.1mm, Weight: 0.82gms.

Dark grey-brown flint of good quality, with slight cloudy patina on the dorsal side only, saw. Flake with parallel flakes removed from the dorsal sider and faint ripples across the ventral. One edge bears very fine serrations, better felt than seen, executed by very short retouch executed from the dorsal side. Broken and battered at both ends, probably deliberately as the object fits well between finger and thumb. The material resembles that of NLM-1CE34B. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC.
