An incomplete biface flaked polished axe, reotuched or unfinished Lenticular / biconvex cross section. Some damage to both faces. The cutting edge is slightly worn, but otherwise is in very good condition, suggesting very little or no usage. The uniformity and symmetry of the edge and the degree of retouching may suggest this was not intended for use. Opaque white patination. Length: 57.4mm; width: 59.2mm; thickness: 29.3mm; weight: 101.22g.

A polished flint axehead. It has a lenticular cross section with slight flattening or faceting of the lateral margins, The cutting edge has suffered considerable post-depositional damage but was originally gently convex. The axe tapers from the cutting edge to the butt. The axe has been polished all over but there are several remnant flaking scars. It has been made using a mid to pale grey marbled flint, probably originally from a tabular nodule and there are small areas of cortex remaining on both the broad faces. Date: Neolithic - 3500 to 2100 BC Dimensions: 159 mm x 86 mm x 60 …

A polished flint axe. It has a lenticular cross section with slightly rounded edges. The cutting edge has suffered some post-depositional damage and is gently convex and slightly flattened. The axe has been polished over parts of the surface, but several sharp-edged flaking scars remain particularly towards the lateral margins. There is some probable re-working along the tapered butt. This is quite crude and the edges have been pecked and blunted. It has been made using a very pale grey flint which has patinated to an off-white with lines of orange iron staining Date: Neolithic - 3500…

A fragment of Neolithic polished flint axehead. The flint is dark grey brown and has a thick, white, matt patina over much of the surface (the colour of the unpatinated flint can be seen where there is a fresh break - probably as a result of plough damage). The fragment is from the tapering butt of the axe and has breaks at both ends. The sides of the axe are flattened and it is roughly oval in cross section. Date: Neolithic - c. 3500 Bc to 2100 BC Dimensions: 52 mm x 44 mm x 22 mm eight: 70 g

Almost complete Neolithic flint polished axehead, with a chip to the butt end resulting in the loss of one corner. It is c.130mm in length and tapers from c.20mm wide at the butt end to 49mm at the cutting edge. Its maximum thickness is 26mm. The axehead is orangey-brown in colour with light milky patination. The surface of the axe is not entirely smooth - there a number of chips flanking the sides of the body (?since manufacture). A large piece of flint has been gouged from one of the faces - the flint below is rather more orange than brown with little patination, suggesting this happ…

Polished flint axehead dating to the Neolithic period. The flint is of an orange colour. The axehead was polished by grinding it against a granite rock. This polishing is restricted to both sides of the chopping edge. The butt end has been worked with flakes removed from the axe. There is a slight chip from the axehead at the blade edge. It is possible that this occurred during use, but it is also possible that this represents post-depositional damage. Used for felling trees, the axe would once have been set within a haft. As the haft would have been of an organic material it is now mi…

Incomplete Neolithic polished axehead, badly chipped and showing some iron staining. The flint is 95% patinated, except for one patch which is a transluscent grey. Its incomplete length is 112mm, its width 52mm at the broken end and narrowing to 40mm in width at the other. It weighs 242.46g and is max 32mm thick. Polished axeheads are sometimes thought of as ritual items, although some have clearly been used and this one looks like it has had a rough time of it!

Polished stone axe head. Neolithic 117mm length, 69mm wide, 37 thick. The style of the axehead conforms to Manbys’ class 4D (Manby 1979 66-67). Oval section, rounded cutting edge which tapers down to a thin butt. Large amount of flaking scars on the sides on the last quarters of the butt and over the dorsel and ventral faces. The blade (first quarter of the axe) has been finely ground and polished, removing nearly all of the flaking scars. The dorcel and ventral faces together with but the sides have been slightly ground, but little attempt was made to remove the dee…

A nearly complete polished Neolithic stone axehead (c.3500 - 2351 BC). The axe is an elongated piriform shape in plan with a crescentic cutting edge, and an elliptical profile. It has been finely polished overall but has suffered later modification resulting in a fractured and uneven surface; the butt of the axe has a moderate removal, with extensive removals on both surfaces of the axe at the crescentic cutting edge. Additional moderate retouch is visible along the mesial edges of one surface. The axe has a fine light grey to white colour overall. The axe measures 146.8mm in lengt…

An incomplete and re-used Neolithic polished flint axehead (4000 BC-2351 BC). The lower half including the cutting edge is missing. This axehead is sub-triangular in plan and pointed-oval in side view. It appears to have been re-used following a break. In plan, it has an even rounded butt and the sides flare evenly to the newly formed cutting edge. Both edges are flattened/faceted and have battering as if used as a hammerstone or anvil. This axehead is matt off-white to grey with some iron staining. Length: 88.0mm; width: 45.7mm; thickness: 22.4mm. Weight: 101.64g. A su…

Less than half of a Neolithic polished axe of patinated light grey and light brown with an ancient transverse bending fracture which has hinged over and plunged towards the cutting edge on one face. This was probably caused by the last swing of the axe. The cutting edge has one recent chip and is still quite sharp. The lateral edges are ground but not faceted. 73.5 x 78 x 35mm.

A Neolithic flint polished axehead. The axe is sub-oval in plan and pointed oval in section; both long edges taper to a point rather than having side facets. The cutting edge is smooth and complete apart from a small notch which has the appearence of recent damage caused by its presence within the plough-zone. The butt is slightly concace both in plan and in section, and is possible a break. The surface of the axe is smooth and highly polished. On both long sides there is evidence of at least one large flake having been removed. A bulb of percussion is seen along both flake scars. Tha…

An incomplete Neolithic polished flint axehead (4000 BC-2351 BC) This axehead is sub-rectangular in plan and pointed-oval (lenticular) in cross-section. Both long edges taper to a point rather than having side facets. The butt end and the cutting edge are missing due to old breaks. One face exhibits two large negative flake scars, the upper of which has a hinge fracture. These scars probably post-date the polishing. The opposite face has three major negative flake scars and the upper and lower scars appear to post date the polishing. The axehead, including the breaks and negativ…
