Object type: PICK
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: City of Southampton
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint pick of Mesolithic (or early Neolithic) date, rolled and polished by water action. Both faces are bevelled, but one in a more definite triangular cross-section. There are removals all over the surface of the pick; no cortex is present. The butt is oblique while the cutting end is now rounded due to wear. Both longitudinal edges have been 'battered', a common feature on implements of this type. The light grey flint has become weathered, and in many areas has taken on yellow and orange hues from iron staining.

Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Isle of Wight
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete Late Mesolithic to early Neolithic pick (c. 6500 BC c. 2900 BC).The pick, made from an elongated flint nodule, is largely trapezoidal in cross-section. However the butt end is semi-circular in cross-section. It has been crudely flaked and is 'waisted' at the centre. In side view it is 'hog-backed'. In plan, the cutting edge is slightly pointed (almost semi-circular) and its side view is 'V'-shaped. The upper face of the butt end is battered and has been used as a hammer.
The flint is mainly buff/beige and has some slightly darker areas.

Object type: PICK
Broad period: NEOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete flint pick of probable Early Neolithic date (3500 BC-2900 BC).
The pick is sub-rectangular in plan and sub-triangular in cross-section. It has been made from an elongated flint pebble and has been almost knapped overall. There is a small amount of cortex at the butt end. The arrises are generally sharp. The asymmetrical cutting edge is not particularly sharp.
This pick is light grey with some creamy mottling. The cortex is orange buff and there are three natural voids.
This implement, similar to many others found in the Isle of Wight, is probably a local product as flint…

Broad period: NEOLITHIC

Early Neolithic pick made from a large flint cobble. The pick has an irregular unworked butt, beyond which is a thinned trapizoid hafting section. This section is 43.5 by 23.1mm at the narrowest point and formed by very large flake removals which have left two almost straight slightly converging large sides joined by shorter roughly straight side. From this it thickens and widens to 63.0mm by 49.6mm into an almost pointed oval shaped blade. The blade end again has crude flake removals which have left large angular arises. The blade itself is narrow, about 48.2mm wide, and curved with s…

Probably Neolithic pick made from a large flint cobble.
The pick has one almost completely flat side with traces of flake removals around the edge and at the butt. This area may have been damaged and the knapper deliberately worked around it. However given that the knapped butt is slightly thicker it is possible the worked area has been lost from this side due to a post-knapping break, either natural or possible from some slight fire damage. The pick has been worked with large crude invasive flaking. It is trapezoid in section at the blade end with an area of cortex remaining in the …

A complete pick of Late Mesolithic to Early Neolithic date (c. 6500 BC-c. 2900 BC). The implement is made of chert and has been knapped overall to form a sub-rectangular shape in plan. It is sub-triangular in cross-section, blunt at the butt end and the cutting edge is in the form of a three faced point. This implement is probably a local product as chert occurs naturally in the Isle of Wight. 178.4 x 64.1 x 42.3mm. Weight: c. 466g. Donated by the finder to the Isle of Wight Heritage Service.

Mesolithic flaked flint pick, measuring 106.12x57.57x45.15mm and weighing circa 300g. The flint is 100% heavily patinated with c.40% cortex remaining.
The butt end is thickest and widest (max.dimensions, above) while the cutting end is rounded, narrower and thinner (41.53mm wide to a point).
A tranchet-style flake has possibly been removed on one side at the cutting edge (for sharpening purposes). The butt end is possibly damaged.

Mesolithic
Length 55mm, width 26mm, thickness 14mm
The bulb of percussion and any other details has been obscured by bifacial invasive retouch. The cross section is sub oval, the sides are bevelled. One end is narrowed with a slightly flattened terminal, this would have been the original striking platform, whilst the other end is has a rounded working edge that has been formed by the removal of several flakes.
Off white patina with occasional light grey patches, very occasional small patches of orange iron staining on some of the upper peaks of the flaking scars.

The pick is sub-rectangular in plan and sub-triangular in cross-section. It has been made from an elongated flint pebble and has been knapped overall. Some small areas of off-whitish grey cortex survive on the dorsal and ventral faces and also the butt end. The arrises are generally sharp. However, two on the dorsal face appear to have been deliberately battered. The asymmetrical cutting edge is sharp.

A pebble of grey flint with cream flecks, worked from several acute platforms with flakes removed alternately from each side in the chopper core manner. This has left a pick-like object and it may be so as one end is sharp, but the platform edge on the lateral margin is crushed and abraded and this continues to the opposite end. Butler illustrates a pick on page 106, fig 42, 3.

A fragment of a possible knapped flint pick, dating to the Mesolithic period (c. 8300-4001 BC). The pick is sub-rectangular in plan and sub-lentoid in cross section through the centre and across the break. The cutting edge of the pick is crescentic in plan, with a curved upper surface and concave lower surface in profile. A series of large removals are visible to the mesial edges with finer removals at the cutting edge. Cortex is retained along the central ridge of the dorsal face, extending from the break to the cutting edge; this is focused near to the break in a sub-lozengical form…
