A utilised naturally perforated Flint peblle utilised as a possible flint pebble hammer of Mesolithic to early-Neolithic date, c.9000-3300 BC. It is formed by a oval flint with a central tapered hole. The oval hole appears a natural feature with possible later knapping taking place. Although recorded as a possible Hammerstone it equally could of served as a net sinker. Each end reveals some impact damage/crushing which has not occured to the sides. The flint has a smooth brown patina. Dimensions are; Length 84 mm. Width 53.5mm Height 44 mm. Hole c.33 and tapers to 17.5 mm. whic…

Perforated "mace-head", from a modified water-worn pebble of an unidentified brown banded stone, probably a glacial erratic. The perforation is slightly off-centre, and of hourglass section, the hole is pecked, and of pointed oval shape, this is due to a weaker band of stone, perforation is 8.5 x 7 mm. Surface diameter is 18.5 x 17, and on the other face it is: 16.5 x 16 mm. The smaller end of the pebble is slightly battered, presumably from use. See NMGW-A2477F for a larger example, made of Dolerite and a discussion as to the possible function of these enigmatic objects.

An incomplete possible flint pebble hammer of Mesolithic to early-Neolithic date, c.9000-3300 BC. The hammer head survives as roughly half the original object creating an irregular C shape, the body of the hammer is D-shape in cross-section. The perforation, when complete, would have been an even hourglass shape rather than cylindrical (which differentiate this object type from 'Mace Heads'). There is substantial flaking on the outside which may relate to shaping the object although may also relate to its use, for example at the thinnest part of the head has irregular and rough flakin…

An incomplete perforated quartzite pebble hammer/mace head of Mesolithic to early Bronze Age date (c. 9000-1800 BC). Description: The object is made from a smooth waterworn quartzite pebble which, when complete, would have been oval in shape. Approximately 50% remains, with a break across the centre of the perforation, which is hourglass in section, indicating that it was worked from both sides. There is some evidence of pecking on the rounded edge of the object, indicating that it has probably been used as a pebble hammer. On the external surfaces, the quartzite is orange-brown in co…

A flint pebble macehead manufactured from a naturally perforated flint sponge fossil pebble of light grey flint. The object is sub triangular in shape and has been roughly worked with hard hammered flaking around all sides; the central piercing is unworked and comprises the natural void of the sponge body. There is extensive battering damage around the exterior, likely from use. Artefacts of this type are presumed to be of Mesolithic date.

Complete perforated object, stone 'pebble' macehead, oval in shape with a central perforation slightly 'hour-glass' shaped and very smooth. The stone is speckled with a greenish-blue hue and several green blue fault lines running through it. It is probably Cornish or Welsh in origin. Measures 151x101x42 and weighs 945g (to nearest 5g). Similar to an example in Flint Implements (The British Museum 1968) from Marlborough in Wiltshire and dating to the Mesolithic (Plate X, no.7).
