33 Microliths Late Mesolithic The artefacts range from 24mm long, 8mm wide, 3mm thick, to 9mm long, 6mm wide, 1mm thick. most of the artefacts have two arrises, one on each side, there is one point in the group (24mm long, 8mm wide, 2mm thick), 7 blunted points, and 25 other styles of microliths. These artefacts could have been mounted on the shaft of an arrow and may represent evidence of hunting tools from the site. Most of the flints have a light grey patina and the rest an off white patina. These are part of a large assemblage of 511 fl…

A later Mesolithic flint microlith of Clark’s type D, (Geometric, rombic point). The microlith is sub-square in plan and is 17.7mm long, 12.4mm wide and 3.2mm thick. It is formed on a snapped bladelet and has been retouched on the distal end and both sides. A similar example is number 20 on page 93 of Butler’s (2005) Prehistoric Flintwork. The flint is mottled light grey and white, and is well patinated. Microliths were used to make composite tools consisting of many microliths set into one setting.

Five Mesolithic flint microliths, numbers refer to those on photograph. 1) Microlith Blade, weighing 0.62g. Mesolithic (8300-3500 BC). There are signs of retouch at the proximal end (butt) of the dorsal surface (upper face). On the ventral surface (lower face) the bulb of percussion and the waves are very shallow. At the distal end (tip) the tool has been deliberately broken signifying the flake was once longer. Length: 26.39mm, Width: 14.25mm, Thickness: 3.41mm. 2) Microlith Blade, weighing 0.58g. Mesolithic (8300-3500 BC). At the proximal end (butt) of the ventral surface (low…

A flint microlith of probable Mesolithic date. The microlith is a tertiary flake of mottled mid brownish-grey flint. It measures 26.7mm by 9.2mm by 2.9mm and weighs 0.7g. It appears to have been manufactured using the microburin technique to remove the proximal end. There are several longitudinal flaking scars on the dorsal surface. One lateral side has been retouched along its entire length. The retouch is short and very abrupt.
