Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A knapped Mesolithic or early Neolithic flint blade or bladelet which is probably a microdenticulate. The blade is complete, with the proximal end having a feint bulb of percussion on the ventral face. The dorsal surface has three vertical negative linear scars and one lateral edge has a very fine retouch. This retouch is not particularly visible, but can be felt. It is trapezoidal in section. The flint is a pale mottled grey to white in colour. The bladelet measures 21.05mm in length, 6.02mm wide, 2.62mm thick and weighs 0.4 grams.

A Mesolithic tool on a possibly broken bladelet; probably a microdenticulate. In plan the microdenticulate is sub-triangular with the dorsal surface having two linear vertical scars, and the ventral surface having a shallow bulb of percussion and ripples. Both lateral edges have fine retouch applied from the dorsal face. In profile the microdenticulate is straight. The flint is of a mottled light grey/white. It measures 16.3mm in length, 6.77mm in width, 2.13mm thick and weighs 0.2g. The microdenticulate dates to the Mesolithic period, where they are more common from the early Meso…

A Mesolithic tool on a possibly broken bladelet, probably a microdenticulate. In plan the bladelet is sub-rectagnular in plan with the dorsal surface having two linear vertical scars, and the ventral surface having a shallow bulb of percussion and a slightly curve in profile at the proximal and the distal end is possibly a broken edge. The bladelet is triangular in section. Both lateral edges have very fine retouch applied from the ventral face. This retouch is more visible along one lateral edge than the other, but is still felt on the other. The flint is of a mottled light grey to m…

The dorsal surface has three main linear vertical scars, and the ventral surface has a shallow bulb of percussion and ripples. The distal end is obliquely angled and has re-touch on the edge. A Mesolithic tool on a bladelet; a microdenticulate. In plan the microdenticulate is a sub elongated triangle and is triangular in section. The dorsal surface has two main linear vertical scars, and the ventral surface has ripples. The proximal end is missing, this is not recently as the surface matches most of that of the tool. However there is a patch, on the dorsal surface which has a well developed patination suggesting the tool has been knapped from a older flake or blade. The distal end which tapers to a point is missing its tip. One lateral edge has very fine notches along mos…

A flint microdenticulate of Mesolithic to early Neolithic date. A sub-triangular tertiary flake. There are several small denticulations running from the proximal end of the dorsal face along the lower half of the right side. Along the left side a long, inwards curving spall has been removed. Together with two uneven, parallel flakes removed from the upper edge of the right side, this creates a point at the distal end. There are a few wide, parallel flaking scars on the dorsal face, creating a smooth surface. The flint is grey in colour with a slight milky patina. The bulb and butt are…

A microdenticulate on the right margin of a core rejuvenation flake. The retouch extends on the dorsal margin from near the proximal end to the medial , making the straight edge into a fine saw.. The margin then changes direction, oblique to the distal end and carries unrelated serrations of larger size showing from the ventral side. The dorsal surface shows the scars of exceptionally long and similar true blade production; reminiscent of Native American obsidian work( Coe.W.,R.1959.Piedras Negras Archaeology,fig.37,f.) as well as 2 hinged flake removals, which given the quality of th…

A wide blade of cream flint carrying 2 parallel longitudinal ridges and with a little remaining pebble cortex on the distal end. The right dorsal margin shows minor flaking from use as a cutting tool and there is associated diagonal gloss as well as more difuse gloss on the ventral surface. Butler(2005) illustrates microdenticulates on page 111, fig.44, 6-9.

A short cortical flake of cream flecked dark grey flint with the distal end truncated straight. Through the pebble cortex is a short blade scar and there are small invasive parallel removals at the proximal end as platform preparation prior to the removal of this flake. The distal facet has superficial invasive flaking, perhaps from use as an end scraper and the right margin has been semi-abruptly retouched to give a serrated, cutting edge. Butler(2005) illustrates tools with serrated edges on page 111, fig 44, 6-9.

A curved blade of translucent brown flint filled with light grey, grey and cream inclusions. There are sinuous and nearly parallel ridges on the dorsal surface with a hinged termination on the right side. There is a semi-abruptly worked notch visible from the ventral side . On the left margin there is a finely retouched serration running from the proximal end to nearly half the length of the blade. Butler illustrates finely serrated blades on page 131, fig 55, 1-3 and in the same figure a notched blade in illustration 4.

A soft hammer struck thin twisted flake of opaque cream flint. The removal is obliquely orientated to the flaked face of a bladelet core, removing some step fractures and a crushed platform edge. This type of core rejuvenation flake is called a 'flanc de nucleus'. Butler(2005) illustrates one on page 87, fig 31, 9. The right distal margin has been finely serrated and the opposite dorsal ridge has become glossy from prolonged use of the cutting tool and the work rubbing against it in this area. Butler(2005) illustrates a microdenticulate on page 115, fig 46, 5.

A blade with slightly sinuous margins, struck from the edge of the cortex of a pebble of cream grey flint. There is a patch of this on both proximal and distal ends. The right margin has 2 notches and a long line of semi-abrupt retouch along both ventral margins. There is extensive use gloss on the right dorsal facet and more diffuse gloss on the ventral surface.Bond(2004) illustrates retouched blades on page 112, fig 5.96, 18-20.
