A flint chunk which could be debitage (waste material from flint working) or is possibly a core fragment. It looks to have some blade removals, but it is not as intensively worked as most cores, and is not the normal form. It is extensively patinated.

Flint core of broad Mesolithic/Neolithic date (9000 - 2200 BC). The core has been formed from a light grey coloured piece of flint which has cortex remaining on the unworked face. The core is sub-oval and curved in shape, and oval in section. There are possibly bi-polar striking platforms at opposite ends of the chunk, one being much more obvious than the other due to it's flat surface and possible evidence of platform dressing. Narrow blades have been removed from the worked curved side of the core from both ends by parallel striking. It is 34.1mm long x 27.9mm wide x 15.5mm thick. W…

A possible core rejuvenation flake of unknown date, about 9000 BC - 1000 BC. It is formed on patinated to white flint and is sub-triangular in plan. The distal end appears to have been snapped prior to patination. The right egde is part of an earlier striking platform with platform preparation visible on the dorsal face as well as a removal scar. There is possible fine retouch from the ventral face on the left side perhaps indicating that the flake was utilised. The flake is 17.9mm long, 12.2mm wide and 2.4mm thick. 0.52g.

Flint core 53 x 42 x 42mm. Flint, lightly burnt and changed in colour from blue-grey? to light grey. Pebble cortex. Single direction, with plain platform, hammer struck. Assessment: Attempt at prismatic blade core; probably abandoned due to poor quality. Not dateable. (George Smith, Gwynedd Archaeological Trust)

A flint blade core of uncertain (Late Mesolithic to Bronze Age) date. The core is irregular, having seemingly been made from a natural nodule. The single platform is irregular. The worked surface displays several blade removal scars. The white surfaces of the exposed flint are the result of deposition within alkaline soil. Length: 34.6mm; width: 32.1mm. Weight: 22.63g.

Flint core of broad Mesolithic/Neolithic date (9000 - 2200 BC). An exhausted flint core with blade and flake removals taken from several different angles, and showing some evidence of platform dressing to parts of the edge of the flat side of the flint. The flint is mottled grey/light brown colour. It is a tertiary flake, sub-oval in plan and sub-triangular in section. It is 27.1mm long x 21.1mm wide x 13.9mm thick. Weight 8.8g.

A flint core rejuvenation flake of Mesolithic or Neolithic date, about 9000 BC - 2200 BC. The flake is formed on light grey mottled opaque flint with large white inclusions but no patination. The distal end and left side are battered. The flint is a rounded rectangle in plan and is D shaped in section. It is much thicker at the distal end. There are removals from the proximal end which are the ends of blade removals. They are from the dorsal face, stepped, long and abrupt. The battering damage has caused fractures and crazing of the stone. It is 50.9mm long, 36.4mm wide and 18.3mm thi…

Semi-prismatic core. The flint is generally a mid-grey in colour, but one face appears to have developed a slight white patina suggesting this may have been an original 'natural' surface of the flint pebble prior to working. The other face has areas of rusty brown staining which may be iron oxide deposits from the soil. The flint has been subjected to neat, regular single direction flaking in order to produce parallel-sided flakes or blades. Discussion: The core appears to have been designed to produce blades so it is probably Mesolithic or Neolithic in origin. In shape it is ver…

Possible core, Hard hammer struck flakes removed from a natural thermal (frost) fractured piece of a larger nodule of flint. Most of the flakes have been removed from edges of the dorsal face, this retains a small patch of thin and weathered cortex where the flakes didn't meet in the middle, the ventral face has one invasive hard hammer struck flake scar that terminates in a deep hinge, the other flake scar opposing this is of natural origin. The flint was of mottled grey, now stained patchy orange in bands from exposure to iron oxides. If humanly modified, this piece is undiagnostic …

A later prehistoric flint expedient core made on a natural flint pebble. There are a couple of long, blade-like removals and a platform, but otherwise the flint has modern (agricultural) damage to the dorsal side. The reverse is smooth and approximately half of the pebble retains cortex.

Six Prehistoric flint core or core fragments, part of a larger assemblage of 43 peices of debitage, see also (DEV-E7AD5A, DEV-E88F5F). All are of pebble flint. 1. Secondary core, with cortex covering c. 55% of the surface. Of a pale grey/white flint with some ferrous inclusions. The core has a single striking platform, with a number of neat, parallel removals struck from it, some of the later being very small and potential bladelets if intentional. Weight: 39.06g. 2. Secondary core fragment, of a very similar flint and with natural breaks at its rear and bottom. One surviving st…
