Object type: CHISEL
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete prehistoric knapped flint implement, possibly a Neolithic flint chisel (3500-2100 BC). The object has broken in a large hinge fracture approximately one-half to two-thirds of the way down the tool-end. It seems that the butt of the implement and the majority of its body is intact. The remains of the implement consist of a narrowed, thin butt-end, which still maintains a small degree of cortex; the body has been knapped carefully overall to shape into a thin oval cross-section, visible at the break. Both ventral and dorsal surfaces have symmetrical rises, unlike adzes.…

An incomplete flint chisel probably of Neolithic date. The opaque light grey and white sub-rectangular flake is broken at the proximal end. The left and right edges are notched, which suggests that the flake was once hafted. The distal end of the dorsal face has slight retouch. . The ventral face has several flakes removed but is otherwise plain. The surviving length is 32.3mm, the width is 33.4mm, the thickness is 7.7mm and the weight is 11.93g.

Triangular piece of dark grey flint with white circular inclusions. The dorsal face, distal edge is flat with two small nicks in the medial and right side, the left margin distal has a small piece of cortex on the surface. The left margin is conave in appearance with no indication of retouch, while the proximal edge retains some cortex on the edge, the right side is abraded. The medial of the dorsal face is prominent, with a piece protruding out from the face. Which then slopes (angle of about 30 degrees) down towards the distal edge, the slope is flat with some evidence of rippling.…

About half of a polished flint chisel in light grey / white patinated flint with some spotty iron staining. The cutting edge is undamaged, finely ground and still sharp. The break is also patinated and shows "bending fracture" characteristics and was probably broken in use (cf. a complete example found in 1989 at Bradenham (HER 25486) and now in Norwich Castle Museum). 70 x 25 x 18.5mm. Chisels of this type were in use throughout the Neolithic, c.4000 - c.2350 BC

A complete late Neolithic to early Bronze Age flint chisel c.2200-1000BC. Description: The chisel is bifacial flaked, narrowed at the top widening slightly towards the blade end. It is roughly flat on one side and convex on the other forming a rough triangle in cross-section. It is has scaled near-covering low angled retouch particularly on its flat side. The convex side has semi-abrupt long scaled retouch. There is cortex on the left side of the convex side and the retouch on this side was likely to have occurred to remove the cortex along this edge. The flint is dark brown, the c…

A probable core formed unfinished flint chisel of late Neolithic or early Bronze Age date c.4000-1000 BC. Description: The chisel sub-rectangular in shape and pointed oval in cross-section. It has been flaked to shape from a larger piece of flint by covering scaled semi-abrupt flaking. The tool has a hinge fracture at one end is pointed and triangular in plan with cortex still adhering across half of it. It is presumed this is the working end as one would expect the butt end would be flatter. the pointed end has less flaking also, so it is uncertain if this was a working end or if …

An elongate, narrow, sub-oval, bifacially worked flint chisel made on a thick flake or naturally fractured nodule fragment. One face has steep flaking around the entire margin and a central axial zone of chalky cortex remains. The other face has covering, scaled, low angle retouch with an irregular flake pattern, one end is steeply flaked from both sides, producing a sub lozengiform cross-section; the other end is flatter, creating a near plano convex cross section. The 'plano convex' end is blunt; the other end is wedge shaped, formed by an oblique (not tranchet) flake. The tool is c…

A section of a tri-facially worked flint chisel. It is narrow and rod-shaped, possibly a chisel form. One end may be the butt; the other has a flat break, from use of manufacture. One face shows scaled, low angle working struck from the edges, which is now slightly smoothed. The other two faces show larger broader flake removal scars. It has a triangular section and is slightly curvilinear along its length. There is some slight edge battering to blunt angles. The flint is opaque, mid grey with areas of lighter less siliceous flint, darker areas have a mid gloss patina. Date: Late Ne…

A tranchet chisel struck on a tertiary flake of mid brownish grey coloured flint. The artefact is very regular and well made it is likely to be of prehistoric date: Neolithic - Bronze Age (3500-1800 BC). A direct parallel for such a specialist tool has not been found. The chisel is a triangular (wedge) shape in plan and rectangular in cross section. On the ventral face conchoidal ripples can be seen - from this the direction of the initial rough out blow can be identified; this is at right angles to the work on the dorsal face. The two long edges are near vertical and cleaved , on one…

An incomplete struck flint object, probably a chisel of Neolithic date. One blade end survives, terminating part way along the length of the object in a hinge fracture. It is struck from a pale grey/brown flint that has a grey to white patination which also covers the hinge fracture indicative that the break is an ancient one. The object is rectangular in form with parallel sides and pointed oval shaped cross section. Both faces have extensive and careful flake removal and edge retouch, with evidence of possible polishing visible on one face. It measures 83.81mm in length, 45.02mm in …

It has been flaked to shape from a larger piece of flint by covering scaled semi-abrupt flaking. The butt end is flat on the right side and rises up on the left, this form is seen in some similar examples such as NMS-C0C8C7. The pointed end is partially narrow but not narrowing to a full point, typical of the object type. The flaking is clearly produced from hard hammer technology, common after the middle of the Neolithic and combi…

Part of a possible flint chisel. The object appears to be the butt-end of a narrow, elongate bifacially worked tool, probably broken during manufacture. One end rounded, one end rectilinear. Both faces exhibit covering, scaled, semi-abrupt (in places stepped) flaking to form a lozenge shaped cross section. The midline edges are slightly irregular but straight overall, and the butt is irregular in shape. The break is near perpendicular to the long axis and is probably the result of end-shock during manufacture; a second angled facet to the break on one face is noted, co-inciding with a…

The medial segment of a thin flake or blade of translucent brown flint with slight internal cracking as though it has been heated. The oblique truncations have been abraded, taking advantage of this property to blunt the edges. There are 2 divergent dorsal ridges and blunting of the short blade margin. The longer lateral margin is left sharp and there is a nearby small patch of use gloss. It looks like a small hafted tool like a petit tranchet arrowhead but the repetitive use implied by the gloss suggests something like a chisel. Bond(2004) illustrates a petit tranchet on page 124, fi…
