Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Early Neolithic flint blade. The blade is trapezoidal in shape and in cross-section. 2 flakes have been knapped from one face, one on each side. One edge of the tool has been worked to give it a serrated edge. The tool has broken and so is incomplete- it would have been longer when it was made.

Late Mesolithic/ Neolithic flint blade or side scraper, measuring 39x16.3x5.4mm and weighing 3.48g. The right and left dorsal edges have small but repetitive workings along their length, with additional but lighter working on the ventral edges. The flint is heavily patinated with 5% cortex on the upper right dorsal edge and next to this, at the distal end, a break revealing the dark/ black flint underneath. The patination is c.1mm thick.

Probably Neolithic possible blade, measuring 40.7x17.3x5.4mm and weighing 3.91g. The distal edge is the widest part and has been worked thin with a little retouch. The right and left edges extend outwards to meet either end of this edge and have been abruptly worked on both dorsal and ventral faces. There is no retouch. The flint is c.90% patinated with a small patch of iron staining. Retouch shows a dark grey flint beneath.

Incomplete Mesolithic or Neolithic flint flake, snapped transversly in two places. It measures 19.4x15.8x4.8mm and weighs 1.81g. There is some chipping to the right dorsal and left ventral edge although this seems to be from wear. The flint is a translucent brown in colour with a darker stripe through the centre. It has virtually no patination. The flake may well have been intended for use as a blade.

Relatively large flint blade of probable later Mesolithic date (6500BC - 3500BC). The flint tool is sub-rectangular in plan and broadly sub-triangular in cross section. The bulb of percussion is complete and there is evidence of retouch / reworking to both the long sides of the blade. These are most concentrated in the upper right edge. A small area of cortex is also present on blade; this suggests that the flake was produced during the earlier life of the core as this material had not yet been removed. However, the upper face of the blade has a series of flake scars suggesting that it…

The proximal end has snapped, removing the bulb of percussion from the proximal end. The distal end of the ventral surface has an overshoot termination. The hinge fracture and overshoot suggests that this is poor quality flint. There is slight retouch along one od the edges, as well as some post depositional damage. Two Mesolithic microblades, both of a grey flint with an almost blue tinge. They are quite small and fine and must have demanded some very careful shaping to achieve their regular, rectangular form. Both are slightly patinised, the larger with the typical white patina spattered across both faces, the smaller with a more unusual darker one, which streaks across the proximal end. These blades are characteristic of the later Mesolithic period and examples of a very similar nature may be found in Bond (2001, 116; ref. 2) Larger Blade: L.: 38.45mm, W.: 12.15mm, Th.: 5.44mm, Wt.: 3.06g S…

The blades all have either ripples of percussion, a hinge fracture, secondary retouch, a surviving bulb of percussion or a striking platform, which indicate that they have been worked. Some have been broken widthways. All are Mesolithic in date.

Neolithic blade; Knapped flint blade of probable Neolithic date (approximately 3500 BC – 2100 BC). The blade is of opaque, cream-white flint with touches of pale blue and rust-colour in its fabric. It is formed of one long flake with further strikes along the ‘front’ face to give a triangular cross-section. The back face has a prominent bulb of percussion where it was struck away from the core. There is some evidence of secondary working to shape the cutting edges along both long sides of the flake. Length 39.6mm, width 14.8mm, thickness 4.5mm, weight 2.73g

A flint blade which dates from the Mesolithic period. The blade is 31.7mm long, 13.1mm wide and 4.5mm thick. It has diffused bulb of percussion. The dorsal side is scarred from previous parallel removals. The butt is lipped. There is a little cortex surviving on the left hand side, and slight retouch on the distal right hand side. The blade was probably used as a minimally worked cutting tool. This style of blade was most commonly produced in the Mesolithic period (Butler, 2005). The flint is light grey and is patinated.

The flint is dark grey-brown in colour, with some white lines along the right-hand edge of the dorsal face. Length: 25.32mm, Width: 15.95mm, Thickness: 3.56mm Weight: 1.57g

Small flint blade, made from a tertiary flake, probably dating from the Mesolithic to Neolithic. It has a narrow, stepped, butt and diffuse bulb on the ventral face, suggesting that a small soft hammer was used. There are three long, thin flaking scars on the dorsal face tapering to a pointed tip at the distal end. The flint is milky grey in colour and a certain amount of repatination appears to have taken place. The edges are fairly sharp, but notched in places due to plough damage, etc. Length: 23.05mm, Width: 11.98mm, Thickness: 3.28mm Weight: 0.68g

Flint blade, made from a secondary flake, probably dating from the Mesolithic to Neolithic. Both ends of the blade have snapped off and are missing. The remains of a diffuse bulb on the ventral face and discreet rippling suggest that a soft hammer was used. The dorsal face has three long flaking scars, but shows no evidence of further retouch. Two small patches of pebble cortex remain on the dorsal face. The flint is light grey in colour with patches of milky repatination. Length: 26.69mm, Width: 17.80mm, Thickness: 3.61mm Weight: 1.91g

Small flint blade, made from a tertiary flake, probably dating from the Mesolithic to Neolithic. The dorsal face has two long thin flaking scars. There is possibly some very limited retouch along the left-hand edge of the dorsal face. However, this could equally represent later plough damage following deposition. Indeed, the blade is heavily plough damaged and either end has broken away, suggesting that it was originally longer. The flint is light grey in colour with milky repatination in places on both the dorsal and ventral faces. Length: 17.84mm, Width: 12.51mm, Thickness: 4.41m…

Small snapped blade of probable later Mesolithic date (6500-3500 BC). The blade is irregular and possibly is a core rejuvenation flake. The blade consists a clear faceted striking platform on one edge, below which a series of flake scars are present on the dorsal face. The upper scar on the dorsal face is irregular, possibly due to a flaw in the flint. The lower two scar facets represent the removal of blades in an opposite direction (probably with the core being worked in a direction of 180 degree to the striking platform present on this flake. The reverse (ventral) face has several a…

A Neolithic flint blade from the outer area of the core. The flint is probably a river sourced pebble. The blade shows both hinge fractures on the front (dorsal) face and choncoidal fractures and bulb of percussion on the reverse (ventral). The striking platform is also present. The retouch on the long edges is from indirect percussion and is neat and regular. The cortex suggests that several blades have been removed from the core prior to the removal of this flake
