Object type: SIDE SCRAPER
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint side scraper which probably dates from the Neolithic period, but which could be Mesolithic. The scraper is shaped like a backwards D and has semi-abrupt to abrupt retouch along the curved, convex, left hand side. There is some cortex on the dorsal face, but a removal from the right hand side interrupts the face. The ventral face has some patination. The scraper is 28.7mm long, 20.6mm wide and 7.4mm thick.

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Wakefield
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint flake with some abrupt and semi-abrupt retouch. The flake is 67.8mm long, 26.5mm wide and 8.7mm thick. There is abrupt retouch on the left side and some semi-abrupt retouch on the right. The distal end appears to have been worked slightly more invasively, possibly for use as a piercer. The flint is dark brown and opaque. This tool is difficult to date because it is not particularly diagnostic, but may be from the Mesolithic period.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A worked microlithic flint tool which probably dates from the Mesolithic period. The tool is sub-lozenge or kite shaped. It is wider at the distal end. It is 35.3mm long, 15.8mm wide and 6.5mm thick. There is semi-abrupt parallel retouch and wear along both edges of the proximal end, extending nearly to the distal end on the left side. There is a fresh break at the distal left hand side, but some cortex surviving on the left before the break shows that the retouch did not extend along the whole side. The function of the tool is not completely clear, but the proximal end may have been u…

Three flakes of flint debitage which are either Mesolithic or Neolithic in date. The flakes are not diagnostic. All three are tertiary and are unworked. They are patinated and are mid grey in colour with white inclusions. They weigh 7.24g all together. Small chips of white quartz were also found in the area.

A flint piercer dating from the Mesolithic period. The flint is sub-rectangular but tapers to a point at the distal end. It is 36.2mm long, 16mm wide and 4.4mm thick. The tool is formed on a tertiary flake which has itself been removed from a larger flake (there are two bulbs of percussion). There is evidence of platform preparation. There is abrupt retouch along the right hand lateral side and at the distal end on the left side forming a blunted point at the distal end. Mesolithic awls and piercers are generally smaller than similar tools in other periods of prehistory and are quite r…

A small flint debitage flake which probably dates from the Mesolithic or Neolithic periods. The flake is sub-triangular and is 16.2mm long, 8.7mm wide and 2.3mm thick. It is a tertiary flake which does not appear to have been retouched though there is some post depositional edge damage. It is probably a waste flake from tool making. The flint is very patinated and is white.

A flint blade which dates from the Mesolithic period. The blade is 31.7mm long, 13.1mm wide and 4.5mm thick. It has diffused bulb of percussion. The dorsal side is scarred from previous parallel removals. The butt is lipped. There is a little cortex surviving on the left hand side, and slight retouch on the distal right hand side. The blade was probably used as a minimally worked cutting tool. This style of blade was most commonly produced in the Mesolithic period (Butler, 2005). The flint is light grey and is patinated.

A small retouched bladelet from the Mesolithic. This is classed as a blade due to its length being twice that of its width. There is retouch down the right side and distal end. This secondary flint has cortex on its proximal end. The flint has a deep brown hue and measures 21mm x 12.4mm x 2.8mm, weighing 0.83g. This dates between 8300-3500BC.

Possibly a crescent-shaped flint microlith dating to the Mesolithic. This broad-blade microlith has a long, curved cutting edge along the right side whereas the left side has been knapped flat to form this semi-circular appearance, or 'crescent' shape. This is similar to the Lanceolate type (Chris Butler, 2005, fig.36.3c/d). It measures 22.8mm x 17.9mm x 4.9mm, weighing 1.90g.

A retouched flint blade fragment. It has fine retouch down one edge and more crude retouch down the other. There is a break at each end which are post-depositional since the patina does not cover the broken edge. This could have been a transverse arrowhead, but too little remains to be certain. This retouched blade would date to the Mesolithic or early Neolithic. It measures 13.8mm x 13.3mm x 3.1mm, weighing 0.77g.

A heat altered flint flake. This flint could be mistaken for a retouched flake due to the end appearing to have retouch, but in fact the marks are small potlid fractures which are not quite at edge following close inspection. This is accompanied by the small hairline fractures over the dorsal and ventral surfaces, caused by firing. It measures 18.1mm x 15.5mm x 5mm, weighing 1.51g.

A flake of flint which is 25.7mm long, 21mm wide and 4.6mm thick. The flake has been struck during flint working, but has not been retouched, so is not a tool form. It can be considered to be debitage. The flake is D shaped in pan and is a secondary flake with cortex surviving on half of the dorsal face. There is a striking platform at the opposite end to the cortex, and edge damage on the proximal and left side edges. The flint is high quality and dark brown in colour with hardly any patination.
