A Mesolithic to Neolithic flint tool, probably a scraper. Multiple flakes have been removed from the surface, but an area of cortex remains. The exact dimensions of the scraper are missing, but it appears that it would have been suitable as a thumb scraper: a tool designed to be held between thumb and forefinger. It weighs 33.7 grams. Scrapers like this would have had many different functions in the Neolithic, as they were very useful tools, used for example for skinning animals, removing the fatty deposited from hinds and much more.

Prehistoric knapped lithic implement. The flint was recorded at a rally as a lithic implement, and therefore must have shown signs of working. These removals are difficult to discern from the photograph and cannot be described in any more detail. The flint has acquired a milky-white patina, but is dark grey-black in recent removals. It measures 48.7mm long and weighs 7.6 grams.

A flint flake or incomplete blade, Mesolithic to Neolithic (8300-2000 BC). The flint is roughly triangular in plan. It has only been shaped on the upper face, where it is convex with a prominent central ridge. The flat back means the whole tool has a triangular section. A recent break at the wide end of the implement has distorted the shape, but it is probably debitage or a broken blade. The flint measures 42.6mm long and weighs 7.29 grams.

The ventral face is not retouched but shows a diffuse bulb of percussion with widely spaced ripples suggesting a soft hammer was used to create the flake. The dorsal face is faceted suggesting at least four previous flakes were removed. There is a chip out of the blade just below the striking pl…

The material was examined firstly by Jill Cook of the British Museum who suggested a Late Upper Paleolithic date and secondly by Matt Pope of ASE who agreed the dating was possible.
The collection consists of 16 flakes, some with re-touch or use wear which were found erroding out of the edges of paths and bare patches of earth on the Seven Sisters. Due to foot and other traffic the flints are vulnrable to modern damage and snapping and are also at risk from cliff erosion. The …

Later Upper Palaeolithic secondary flake (15,000-8,300 BC). The flake surface shows evidence cortex reforming giving an indication of the age of the flake, it is also patinated from light grey to white reflecting the deposition chalk downland.
60% of the dorsal surface (upper face) is covered in original cortex with evidence for two previous flake removals. There are signs of platform preparation at the proximal end and a hinge fracture at the distal end. On the ventral surface (lower face) the bulb of percussion and bulb scars can be seen. There is a small area of possible retouch o…

There is a prepared platform at the proximal end with some modern damage. On the dorsal surface (upper face) there are arrises from previous flake removals. There is original cortex remaining at the distal end and down the distal end of the left edge of the dorsal face. There is a small area of starch fracture towards the centre of the left edg…

Later Upper Palaeolithic tertiary flake (15,000-8,300 BC). The flake surface shows evidence cortex reforming giving an indication of the age of the flake, it is also patinated from light grey to white reflecting the deposition chalk downland.
The striking platform has been removed at the proximal end due to old damage, this has also removed the bulb of percussion although percussion waves are still clear on the ventral face. There is a hinge fracture at the distal end. On the dorsal surface (upper face) there are arrises from previous flake removals. There is a small area of starch f…

There is a prepared platform at the proximal end. On the dorsal surface (upper face) there are arrises from previous flake removals. On the ventral surface (lower face) part of a bulb of percussion can be seen in the lower left corner suggesting it broke during striking or shortly after. There is a hinge fracture at the distal end and possible u…

Later Upper Palaeolithic secondary flake (15,000-8,300 BC). The flake surface shows evidence cortex reforming giving an indication of the age of the flake, it is also patinated from light grey to white reflecting the deposition chalk downland.
There is a prepared, but damaged, platform at the proximal end. On the dorsal surface (upper face) there are arrises from previous flake removals and evidence of platform preparation. There is a large area of original cortex at the distal end, visible on both sides. On the ventral surface (lower face) part of a bulb of percussion and bulb scars…

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Leaf shaped arrowhead formed on a secondary flake. The percussion waves are still visible on the ventral face suggesting the original striking platform and bulb or percussion were at the point of the arrow and have been removed during the shaping of the arrowhead. There are arisses from previous flake removals on the dorsal face and a small area of cortex at the distal end of the flake (the butt end of the arrowhead). There is scaled semi abrupt short retouch at the point of the arrow on the distal face and the butt has been shaped from both sides to give a short tang. On the ventral f…

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Small flint blade of possible Mesolithic - Neolithic date. The blade is a tertiary piece with no original cortext remaining but it has extensive patination which has been stained orange by iron in the soil. The base colour of the flint appears mid grey in areas of modern damage with light grey cherty inclusions that have patinated differently. There is a prepared striking platform at the proximal end; bulb of percussion, percussion waves and bulb scars on the ventralk face and multiple arises on the dorsal face from provious removals. There is some modern chipping in the middle of the …

Object type: CORE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Incomplete flint core with c.20% cortex remaining on one side. The remainder of that side has a natural break as does the top where the striking platform was. However the other side has 4 straight parallel arises showing where flakes or blades have been removed in a regular way. Negative bulb scars suggest the striking platform was level with the top of these sides. It maybe a piece of waste flint that was reworked to provide several straight blades/flakes rather than a regular core. It is pale orange in colour with large mottled inclusions and is likely to be local flint. It is probab…

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Large flint blade, secondary flake with c. 10% cortex remaining at the distal end. Prominent bulb of percussion; multiple arises and negative bulb scars on the dorsal face. Small area of short, semi-abrupt scaled retouch two thirds of the way down from the proximal end on the right hand edge of the ventral face. Probable damage rather than retouch at the centre of the right hand edge on the dorsal side – possibly an attempt to snap the flint. It maybe a large flake deliberately stuck to remove the mis-struck remains of the previous removal visible on the dorsal face. It is dark grey …

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Small flint tertiary blade. Small bulb of percussion. Multiple arises and negative bulb scars on the dorsal face including small removal scars at the proximal end which have not however removed the striking platform. The distal tip is snapped and there is use wear down both edges and at the distal end on the left edge of the dorsal face. It is an even dark brown in colour. It is probably Mesolithic - Neolithic in date. 50.5mm long, 13.8mm wide, 4.8mm thick and 3.39 grams.
