Object type: AXE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Blade end of a flint re-worked polished flint axe susquently partially burnt. A large part of the polished blade end of the original axe survives but below this the body has been re-worked with the removal of a number of large flake. Following this the surface, especially on one face, has been affected by discolouristaion and small pocking due to partial burning. Colour is a medium to dark grey/pale/grey. length 70mm, width 53mm, thickness 25mm, weight 75g. The original polished axe is Neolithic in date and the subsquent flaking Neolithic or Bronze Age the date of the burning is unknown.

The blade measures 35.04mm in length, 24.30mm in width, 5.59mm in thickness, and weighs 6.14g. The blade is of probable Mesolithic date, the edge retouch of Neolithic or later date. 2) An unpatinated, snapped, small long flake or blade with limited edge retouch. The butt end of an ovate or pointed hand-axe of Lower Palaeolithic date. The flint is dark grey in colour and has deep medium brown coloured staining on the surfaces and on the breaks, suggesting that the breaks are ancient. It has fine, shallow bifacial flaking on all surfaces leaving just three small areas of cortex visible. There is little evidence of rolling and no evidence of ploughmarks suggesting recent disturbance. The axe measures 96.31mm in length, 79.55mm in width, 30.35mm in thickness, and weighs 221.86g. This fragment is of Lower Palaeolithic date from between c.700,000 an…
