Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Oval in plan, concave in profile, mottled grey/bronw piece of flint. Dorsal face distal end has retouch from the medial to left margin of the edge, the distal edge appears to be darker in colour to the rest of the piece. The right margin is sharp and may have been retouched in places, may have been a blade/knife. The proximal edge appears stepped, as if pieces have been broken off, possible attempt at backing (but not very well), with the left margin and edge appearing sharp and more prominent on the dorsal face. The ventral face appears very smooth from the proximal to medial an…

Flint awl or piercer, almost diamond shaped in plan and lozenge shaped in profile with one end more rounded. The upper right and left margins have been retouched. The lower left margin has some non-beach cortex on it covering 1-49% of the total surface area. The flint is a dark brown streaked with ochre in colour. Mercer (1981) illustrates a similar example on page 137, Fig. 60, No. L 171 which is dated to the Neolithic period.

A complete Early Neolithic flint scraper, possibly a horshoe type. The scraper is long and broad leaf shape, with a triangular cross section. The ventral surface is flat and has a bulb of percussion with radiating ripples. It has retouch along all edges is mostly unifacial with very minimal bifacial retouch along two edges. The dorsal surface retains some of the original cortex. The flint is light to dark gray and is not very opaque. It is 69.02 mm L x 33.76 mm W x 16.04 mm TH. It weighs 32.6 g.

Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An irregular core which has been extensively worked in one direction and shows slight evidence of being worked in a secon direction (from the opposite end) to produce small blades or microliths of probable later Mesolithic date (5000-3500 BC). The core is probably derived from a riverine pebble and has several areas of irregular surface caused by movement. The fragment is worn and the remains of working / striking platforms is lost. There is no evidence of rejuvenation flakes or multi platform working. The core is a mid- grey colour with a slightly milky white coloured patina. The cor…

A mottled brown and grey flint scraper, appears to be either a horseshoe or end and side scraper, material likely derived from a local beach pebble. Lozenge in plan and plano convex in profile and section. The scraper has been unifacially touched at the distal and lateral ends of the dorsal face. The proximal end has been partially removed cutting through the bulb of percussion on the ventral face.

Mottled grey and brown in colour, was likely derived from a local beach pebble. Appears to be a flint scraper, appears oval in plan and plano convex in profile and section. The scraper has been unifacially retouched at the distal end of the dorsal face, the proximal end has been broken off above the bulb of percussion on the ventral face. Dorsal face does have some remains of cortex on the left side of the dorsal. Similar in appearance to an end scraper.

Mottled grey to brown piece of flint with white inclusions, consistant in appearance with material derived from local beach pebble. The dorsal face has a medial ridge running along the centre from proximal to distal, the remaining point is located at the proximal end of the tool, while it appears that there may have been a second point at the distal end which may haven been snapped off then retouched to remove sharp edges. Retouching is present around the curves on both the right and left margins on the dorsal face leading up to both the stub (distal end) and remaining point (proxi…

Flint core tool, possibly used as a scraper. It is sub-oval in plan. There is a platform at one end and flakes have been removed part-way round. It has been retouched on the edge of the platform. The flint is opaque, dark grey in colour, with white flecks and patches of off-white patina. There is secondary cortex. It is likely that it was derived from a local beach pebble. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar example on page 138, Figure 5.125, F11, which is dated to the Early Neolithic.

Brown in colour, flint flake knife, oval in plan and plano convex in profile and section. Medial ridge running from the along the centre of the implement from the proximal to distal ends, less than 1% o the cortex remains on the dorsal side tip (distal end). Appears to have sustained damage at the proximal end dorsal side, would not associate this with use wear or retouching. Dorsal face has been backed on the right margin distal end and retouched on the left margin distal end. There does apear to have been retouching on the right margin of the ventral face, agan at the distal end. Po…

A translucent smokey brown piece of flint, square in plan and flat in profile. Conchoidal waves are present on both the dorsal and ventral faces. The dorsal face appears to have been retouched down the whole of the left margin edge, the proximal end has been removed below the bulb of percussion leaving sharp edges implying it has been snapped off rather than worked, while the distal edge has smoother sides implying retouching or deliberate wear and tear.

The proximal end dorsal face shows signs of retouching at the base of the medial ridge, which runs along the dorsal face ending at the distal end of the artefact. The left side of the medial ridge (dorsal face) has a gentle concave slope ending at the left margin, whcih shows some signs of retouching, the right side of the medial ridge has a more steeper concave slope ending at the right margin. A pale grey blade flake, convex in profile, the dorsal face has about 50% cortex covering its face on the left side, there appear to be indentations on the right side of the dorsal face and right margin. Proximal end has been snapped through the bulb of percussion. The right margin is sharp but does not appear to exhibit any obvious signs of retouching. Described by William Andrefsky, Lithics Macroscopic Approaches to Analysis, as a Conchoidal flake, page 19 figure 27.

A mottled grey to brown flake knife, appears to have been bifacially worked, the proximal end, right margin on the dorsal face shows signs of retouch resulting in a blade edge. Left side of the dorsal face exhibits several strike marks from proximal to distal edges. The ventral face, shows signs of heat damage, with at least three 'blow out' impressions within the surface of the flint, the bulb of percussion appears to be present but has been partially removed by the heat damage and retouching. The distal edge appears to have been broken then backed.

The proximal end appears to have been snapped, with the edges still sharp, the bulb of percussion is still present on the ventral face, which also exhibits an indentation at the centre of the face. The right and left margins are sharp but so not exhibit any signs of retouching. The artefact appears to be the tip of a small knife.

A single platform blade core on a piece of nodular flint from outside Cornwall; where it only occurrs as rolled pebbles. Flint colour is mid/dark grey with grey inclusions. The major platform has not been abraded prior to blade removal and the ridges are not very parallel. These features and the use of nodular flint, which occurred late in this Westerly location suggests that the period is Later Neolithic rather than Mesolithic. A new platform was attempted from the rear face but abandoned after some small flake removals.Butler,2005 shows a similar core on p.156, fig.65.1.
