A Neolithic flint blade from the outer area of the core. The flint is probably a river sourced pebble. The blade shows both hinge fractures on the front (dorsal) face and choncoidal fractures and bulb of percussion on the reverse (ventral). The striking platform is also present. The retouch on the long edges is from indirect percussion and is neat and regular. The cortex suggests that several blades have been removed from the core prior to the removal of this flake

An edge trimmed and notched blade which has been bi-facially retouched, possesses a feathered termination and has been expediently made. The right margin of the dorsal face exhibits discontinuous, edge retouch with a low angle to give a serrated edge. The distal end of the dorsal face exhibits partial retouch with a semi-abrupt angle and again is of edge extent. Two longitudinal arrises are present as well as a notch which has been prepared on the left margin close to the proximal end. There is also a small area of gloss to the proximal end of the dorsal face, possibly indicating use…

A snapped flint blade of later Mesolithic date (4000 -3000 BC). The blade is rectangular in plan and has a crested cross section. The striking platform and bulb of percussion are lost. The dorsal face has a large area of cortex present suggesting that this should be claseed as secondary debitage . One of thelong edges has been reworked with neat and even scaled retouch which creates a good cutting and scraping edge. The lower section of the opposite long edge shows signs of abrupt direct abrupt retouch. The flint is relatively coarse and a blackish grey colour with few areas of mottli…

A snapped flint blade of later Mesolithic date (4000 -3000 BC). The blade is rectangular in plan and has a crested cross section. Both the upper and lower edges of the blade are snapped - both have a grey coloured developed surface patina. The snapping has also removed the striking platform and bulb of percussion. The long edges have not been reworked although movement in the plough soil suggests abrupt retouch is present. The flint is relatively coarse and a mid grey mottled colour with small areas of translucent milky grey white coloured patina. The blade measures 31mm in length,…

A snapped flint blade of later Mesolithic date (4000 -3000 BC). The blade is rectangular in plan with a tapering point at the distal end' it has a shallow crested cross section. The striking platform and bulb of percussion are lost. The left habd long edge has been reworked with abrupt retouch. The tip of the blade could be deliberately shaped - although it is difficult to tell. The flint is relatively coarse and a mid grey colour. The blade measures 26mm in length, 13mm width, is 5.1mm thick and weighs 1.6 grams.

An unusual notched snapped blade formed of mid grey mottled flint of later Mesolithic date. The blade has been deliberately snapped and the base of the slender flake survives. One edge (left hand) has a burin removal which has created a slight step. The opposite edge has a deliberately formed U shaped notch, which is reworked on both faces with neat and well formed scaled and overlapping secondary flaking. This reworking is most apparent on the dorsal face, although on the ventral the tip is thinned by parallel flaking. One long edge has a small section of cortex suggesting this was f…

Flint blade like flake of later Mesolithic date (4000 -3000 BC). The flake is broadly rectangular in plan and has a crested (triangular shaped) cross section. The striking platform and bulb of percussion have been removed by trimming / snapping. There is no evidence of the edges being reworked - and it is this represents a piece of secondary debitage / blade removal during preparation of a new core. The blade is a mid mottled grey colour with a large piece of white cortex along one edge. It measures: 18.2mm in length, 11.1mm width, is 3.7mm thick and weighs 0.6 grams.

Knapped flint blade, tertiary piece with two small areas of retouch and a snapped distal end. The ventral side has a bulb of percussion, bulb scars, percussion waves and short areas of short, scalar semi-abrupt retouch in the cenre of the left edge and towards the distal end of the right edge. It was struck from a prepared platform with a central aris on the dorsal face from previous flake removals from the core. Single pieces of flint with few diagnostic features are hard to date precisely but well made blades of this type are usually Mesolithic to Neolithic in date (8000-2100 BC). I…

Flint bladelet which has been retouched on right hand margin as viewed from ventral face and left hand margin as viewed from dorsal face. There is a sign of having been broken at the distal end. Signs of burning are evidenced by white/chalky colour of the flint. Less than 1% of cortex remains. The flint is a light grey colour and was likely derived from a local beach pebble. Bond [2004] illustrates a similar example on page 95, fig 5.81, No. 15 which is dated from the Mesolithic.

A complete Mesolithic blade with a little semi-abrupt retouch near the tip to form a possible awl point. The blade shape is irregular and tapers towards both ends. Its cross-section is a shallow triangle, with the apex being the prominent dorsal ridge. The ventral face has very faint percussive ripples, these indicate it was struck from the end which now forms the awl tip. There is no distinguishable bulb of percussion. To the left of the awl tip is a short section of semi-abrupt retouch from the ventral side to form a point. The dorsal face has a prominent, central ridge runnin…

Flint edged blade, rectangular in plan, concave-convex in profile and triangular in section. The blade has been retouched on the left and right margins of the dorsal face with some serration. The proximal and distal ends have been snapped off. The cortex is tertiary degree. The flint is a translucent pale grey with cream flecks and was likely derived from a local beach pebble. A twisted blade with a diffuse bulb of percussion, indicating a soft hammer or punch technique. The proximal end also has the remains of platform preparation on the dorsal surface with the the ridge crest reduced in thickness by small blade scars and abrasion at the platform edge. This thin blade has fine retouch on the left lateral margin. There is no remaining cortex but pebbles were being sourced for the mid and light grey mottled flint used here in the Later Mesolithic and Early Neolithic in West Cornwall.Bond,2004 illustrates retouched blades with fine serrations on p.112, fig.5.…

The blade has approx 30% of dorsal face covered with smooth cortex and 10% of the ventral face at the distal end. A flattened medial ridge runs from the cortex to the proximal end. There is retouch on the right edge of the ventral face to accommodate a finger. Dorsal has retouch on the the right side with a notch, which is probably use wear. This may have been intended as as an end scraper, but was adapted to a denticulated knife or scraper for an arrow shaft. The flint is mottled light to dark grey in colour with orange or brown inclusions and was derived from a local beach pebble.…

The blade has its bulb of percussion evident on its ventral face. The dorsal face has a flat medial ridge and both sides have been shallowly retouched to create sharp edges. The tip at the distal end has been snapped off. The flint is opaque cream grey with some white mottled spots and only tertiary cortex. Butler illustrates a similar example on page126, figure 50, number 4. which he dates to the Neolithic.
