Mottled grey to brown piece of flint with white inclusions, consistant in appearance with material derived from local beach pebble. The dorsal face has a medial ridge running along the centre from proximal to distal, the remaining point is located at the proximal end of the tool, while it appears that there may have been a second point at the distal end which may haven been snapped off then retouched to remove sharp edges. Retouching is present around the curves on both the right and left margins on the dorsal face leading up to both the stub (distal end) and remaining point (proxi…

Flint chert awl, sub triangular in plan and plano-convex in profile. The left and right margins have been retouched with possible use as a scraper. The distal tip has been bifacially retouched. The flint is a coarse orange beige with pale grey inclusions and was likely derived from a beach pebble. Bond (2005) illustrates a similar example on page 137, Fig. 5.124, No. F.28 which is dated to the Neolithic period.

Possible Awl. Most of the bulb of percussion has been removed from the ventral face. The lateral edges are parallel until retouch inter cuts into the right edge at the proximal end. The dorsal face has been retouched at the distal end. The left lateral edge has been abruptly retouched at the proximal end to form a point. The is use wear on the right lateral edge when looking at the dorsal face as well as at the proximal end on the ventral face. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar example on page 109, Fig 5.93, No 159 which is dated to the Mesolithic period.

Flint flake, lozenge-shaped in plan, sub-triangular in profile and section. It is a grey flint with white mottles and patches. The dorsal face has a sharp point at the distal end and a possible notch on the upper right margin. There is low-angle retouch on the upper left margin and short, semi-abrupt retouch on the lower left margin. There is secondary cortex on the right margin below the notch. The texture of the cortex suggests it came from a nodule. The ventral face has conchoidal ripples. Bond (2004) shows an awl on a flake that is similar on page 135, Figure 5.121, Diagram F58.

An awl on a prominence left by a transverse break of an over-heated piece of altered pink tinged opaque grey pebble flint. The awl point has parallel glossy invasive flakework on adjacent sides which could be deliberate to resharpen the edges or use wear. In either case heated flint shears with lower force to produce longer and glossy flake scars.Re-used burnt flint debitage seems to be a Neolithic phenomenon in this location but awls have a much wider date range with the underlying flakework style fragmented and fire altered beyond recognition. Butler(2005) illustrates awls on page 1…

Flint awl made on a flake, roughly trapezoid in plan and lozenge shaped in profile. The right margin is snapped and the left margin is sharp edged. The distal end consists of non-beach cortex of which the top half is lighter in tone. The distal edge may also have been retouched. The flint is dark brown in colour and the cortex light and dark beige. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar example on page 135, Fig. 5.121 which is dated to the Neolithic period.

Small piece of blue/grey flint, dexfribed as blue patination by the finder. The dorsal face is uneven, but not rough in tecture, the right margin has clean sharp edges, until the medial, where the margin becomes concave in plan and reaches a point at the distal. Identification of micro retouch along the curve, until reaching the point of the distal. The left margin sappears to have been backed, by following the surface curvature of the piece. The proximal edges appears sharp as if snapped off, the edges are clean. The ventral face is curved, the proximal edge is more pronounced …

Flint pebble awl, almost square in plan and lozenge shaped in profile. The right margin has been retouched and could be used as a scraper and the left comprises backed cortex. The left distal tip could be used as a piercer making this a combination tool. The flint is grey brown in colour and the cortex dark cream covering 1-49% of the surface area. Butler (2005) illustrates a similar example on page 169, Fig. 71, No. 7 which is dated to the Neolithic period.

Awl. It is possible that the awl has been made on a oblique arrowhead. It is sub triangular in plan and D shaped in section. On the ventral face flakes have been removed from the left margin to thin the piece. There is minor retouch near the distal end which has been snapped into a point. The proximal end has also been snapped and a notch inter cuts the left margin. This has been made by a single blow and may possibly be a broken tang. There is semi abrupt retouch on the left margin of the dorsal face, which creates a convexed edge. The right edge has been abruptly retouched. Keene …

Awl with backed blade. The ventral face contains minor 'nibbling' along the length of the right lateral edge. The distal end has been invasively retouched. On the dorsal face the right margin has been snapped along its entire length to give natural backing for the blade on the opposite lateral edge. The left margin has been invasively retouched with subsequent 'nibbling' along its length. The distal end has been semi abruptly retouched to give a concaved edge which ends with a point on the left margin. The flint is dark grey with white fleks. Butler (2005) illustrates a similar exam…

Possible awl. The 'business end' or distal end of the awl is missing. Almost all of the ventral face, both edges and distal end, has been invasively retouched apart from a central section. The proximal end has been heavily retouched, like 'crushing', which may have been used as the hand held part of the tool. On the dorsal face, flakes have been removed diagonally across the length of the piece, possibly to thin it. There is a small amount of cortex on the right margin near the distal end. The left margin has invasive retouch near the proximal end. The flint if grey/ brown nodular fli…

A spalled fragment of over-heated flnt with an original ventral surface and thermal dorsal surface. The flint is altered to a grey brown opaque colour. It is pointed at both ends and has been finely abruptly retouched at one end to make a drill, which could be hafted by using the other end as a tang or as an awl if held in the fingers. Butler(2005) illustrates a piercer on a blade on page 129, fig 54,2.

A thin, hard hammer struck, curved flake of dark brown nodular flint with cream flecks. On the dorsal surface are the stepped flakelet scars from the platform preparation. The margins naturally converge to the distal end but this has been emphasised with notches and semi-abrupt retouch,;worked on the ventral side as well at the tip. This tool appears to have worked as a piercer or awl. Butler(2005) illustrates a piercer on page 129, fig 52, 1.
