Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete Paleolithic uncertain tool - possibly a scraper dating from circa 200,000 to 10,000 BC.. The tool is sub-oval in plan with an area of cortex at one end. The dorsal surface has a roughly central ridge with a shorter ridge to the side. The ventral surface is smooth and slightly dished, with the bulb of percussion at the opposite end to the cortex. The edges appear retouched to all except the cortex. The colour is mainly white with red andgrey marks and a red oval area runs along the central ridge, and it is not opaque. The object is 66.53 mm long, 36.10mm wide & 11.71mm thick…

A incomplete possibly Late Paleolithic uncertain tool - possible a knife or scraper dating from circa 100,000 to 10,000 BC.. The tool is sub-oval in plan with a straight edge on one end - possibly a break. The dorsal surface has a roughly central ridge curving to the left at the rounded end, with an inverted y-shaped ridge at the straight end. The ventral surface is smooth, with the bulb of percussion at the straight end. The edges appear retouched to all except the straight (broken) end. The colour is mainly white with grey and brown marks, and it is not opaque. The object is 72.02mm…

A stout flake of marbled brown flint, struck off a plain platform. The dorsal surface carries a very similar negative hard hammer removed flake scar, suggesting the knapper was carrying out a repetitive sequence of strikes; each one being made nearly 10mm deeper into the platform than the last. There is considerable retouch around the margin and some of it is likely to be abrasion after deposition but as well as the ventral and dorsal scars there are related groups of bold and even removals implying a multi-task tool. On the left margin from the proximal end and seen from the dorsal s…

A small biface of marbled brown flint. The tool has bilateral symmetry in plan and looks like a handaxe but is very small. It appears to have been modified or broken down from a larger tool. A segment of one of the straight converging margins has been removed by a hard normal strike, leaving it blunt. The opposite converging margin has a large notch ground into it. The convex plan tip between these margins is sharp and shallowly retouched; reinforcing the handaxe theory. The 'ventral' side has truncated mostly soft hammer struck converging flake scars wheras the other side has some s…

A scraper made on a very stout hard hammer struck cortical flake from the end of a nodule of Bullhead flint. It is distinguished by its' greenish cortex( albeit still stained by algae on this specimen) and orangey brown outer layer to the flint inside. The scraper retouch around the distal end is abrupt and just enough to remove the cortex. It is more regular than edge damage and forms 3 straight edges. Further flakes around the periphery appear to have been removed for aesthetic reasons to improve bilateral symmetry. This feature is on another cortical scraper found in this deposit(6…

A scraper formed on a flake struck from the cortex of a nodule of marbled brown flint. The striking platform and bulb of percussion have been removed and the plan of the piece has been given bilateral symmetry by abrupt and semi-abrupt removals at the margin. The useable scraper edge runs around all but the back of the tool; which is blunted for a good grip. Another cortical scraper with deliberate symmetry and attention to forming a good hold found in this deposit is CORN-672020, (655.2).

A tool worked from a large flat flake of marbled brown flint. The dorsal surface is an even larger transverse truncated scar. The distal end has remaining nodular cortex. This has been retouched with short stepped scars as an end scraper. The proximal end has been narrowed with abrupt retouch to form a tang to perhaps haft into a bome handle, but it is quite easy to grip without this. The right margin is thin and is retouched or damaged. It is still straight and may have been used as a knife.

A thick pointed flake of marbled brown flint struck from a prepared nodule. Prior to removal from a plain platform steep transverse flakes were struck off which this tool shows truncated from the right side. The ventral surface and platform show 2 complete bulbs of percussion and 2 other strikes. Rather than poor technique this may be a way of producing large, broad and flat flakes. Multiple bulbs of percussion occur on some other flakes from this deposit. The butt has been boldly thinned from the left and the proximal end to make a good hold in the fist. There is blunting on the mesa…

A bifacially flaked flint handaxe dating from the Lower Palaeolithic c.800,000-250,000 BC. Description: The handaxe is quite crude but is roughly pointed with a wide rounded butt. It has been bifacially worked, with flaking cover both sides, this has been uneven however leaving one side much thicker than the other and the thinner side being slightly concave. The flint is heavily patinated a white to beige-white and the internal flint where visible is a mid grey-beige. It has been rolled on the surface causing damage to the desert gloss by glacial frost. There are serval areas of furth…

An Acheulian culture flint biface (handaxe) of Palaeolithic age, in fine condition. The implement has the characteristic flattened base or 'bout coupĂ©' of Neanderthal manufacture. Both sides of the biface have been invasively flaked consistent with soft-hammer percussion. The implement is uniformly patinated in a light creamy colour. It appears to be complete and in original condition. The biface was found on a field surface in West Sussex. It has been examined by Dr Nick Ashton, Curator of the Department of Prehistory at the British Museum, who has confirmed that it is Neanderthal…

The front half of a handaxe that has apparently fallen apart due to thermal cracking after long exposure out of its deposit. It was found within 40 metres of another example (Public-50EB23) which was nearly complete but suffering from similar cracking. Otherwise the fragment is lightly rolled and lustrous with a deep tan stain. The plan of the forward end is of pointed ovate; more pointed than the other example, but otherwise of similar proportions and similarly robust with bold invasive flakes feathering into each other and partially removing previous deeper scars. this suggests …

Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Greater London Authority
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A complete, biface, pointed flint handaxe of Lower Palaeolithic date (400,000 - 250,000 BC for London). One face is approximately flat, whilst the other is steeply convex at the butt-end (a D-shaped cross section), lessening towards the tip. The surface has a mottled orangey/brown patina, and there is no cortex remaining. An area of damage near the tip suggests that the flint was originally grey in colour. The axe is in 'rolled' or abraded condition with an overall glossy patina. The flint has been worked bifacially, with both faces showing numerous, multi-directional flake removals. …

A large ovate handaxe in brown, river-stained flint; complete but for part of the butt broken after deposition but showing some patination. 2 thermal spall pits are on one side meeting the distal edge. A pot-lid pit is also on the opposite side towards the butt. The axe has many thermal cracks and might have broken up soon from exposure. One side had barnacles and the axe has lain on a shingle bank for some time, exposed by low tide. The piece is all over invasively flaked with feathered terminations indicating a good soft hammer technique. There is a little flint nodule cortex on th…
