Object type: ADZE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete Mesolithic flint adze or pick, dating from c. 10,000 to c. 3500 BC. This adze has been made on an elongated flint nodule of a mottled dark grey flint, now patinated white / light grey with evidence of recortification. Being broadly triangular in section this object can be described as a pick as well as an adze. The butt is squared in plan, the side taper gently and evenly towards the tip which is rounded. The adze is worn but is in good condition overall, with an area of post-depositonal damage around the butt.

A group of four pieces of flint debitage of probable Mesolithic to Neolithic in date (c. 8000- 2400 BC). Two pieces are secondary flakes and the other two are tertiary flakes. One of the secondary flakes is a medium brown-grey flint with frequent grey patch inclusions (c.5.7mm) that has most of its ventral surface covered in a thin brown cortex. The remaining three flakes have a creamy white patina with occasional grey mottling. The three white flakes show linear narrow blade removals from their dorsal face, all struck in the same direction as the flakes themselves. Two flakes re…

A complete worked flint pick of Neolithic date. The pick has been formed on a nodule of mottled grey/white flint with iron staining evident of the crests of the removals. The flint has been bifacially worked and a removal across the butt does look tranchet-like but on closer inspection this has been ruled out. The tip of the pick is has a large ridge behind it with multi-directional removals on the side of the tip. Suggested date Neolithic 4000-2000 BC.
