Object type: HANDAXE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A flint Acheulian handaxe of sub-cordate form dating to the Lower-Middle Palaeolithic (c. 400,000 - c. 180,000 BC). The flint is blue-grey in colour with staining of a buff-cream hue. Removals cover the axe, particularly along the edges. These have been worn smooth by water action (see findspot land use). On one surface the axe has been subjected to fewer removals ensuring a more convex shape presumably to aid holding.

Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Published Find published
A flint tool (probable hand axe) of probable Lower Palaeolithic date (c. 500 000 -250 000 BC). The tool has suffered post-depositional breakage along one edge, and considerable rolling. The axe is unifacial, and one edge has been tranchet-worked, but it is not a typical hand axe,and its precise character is ambiguous. It has a deep, toffee-brown patina. The find is typical of the sort of early prehistoric objects found in gravel deposits, but is an unusual find for Northamptonshire. The Palaeolithic, in particular, is poorly represented in both PAS and SMR data. The handaxe …

Bi-facially worked and symmetrical in plan, the implement has a pointed tip and a rounded butt. The extreme point of the tip is missing due to an old break. The flake removals cover the whole of both faces. It is slightly "rolled", although this is hardly noticeable and the patination colour on both faces is generally off-white. This implement falls into Wymer's sub-cordate category: Type G (Wymer 1999, 10-11). This imp…

An ovate flint handaxe of Lower Palaeolithic date. The implement is bi-facially worked and roughly symmetrical both in plan and profile. The flake removals cover the whole of both surfaces, and colour varies from a dark orange-brown to pale grey and buff, the majority being of a yellow shade. There is a small shallow hole on the ventral face, at the proximal end which looks deliberate due to its regular shape. In addition to this, also on the ventral face, there are two incised lines which are deeper than the knapped surface.

Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC

A Neolithic polished flint axehead which has been broken widthways and then reworked. The axe dates from between circa 3500 BC to 2100 BC. The surviving part of the axe is the larger butt end of the tool. The butt end is rounded, with straight sides and the break is also straight - widthways. The break has also formed a hinge fracture. The axehead looks as if it has been extensively polished in its earlier use, but when it broke it looks as if it has been reworked, as it has also been extensively knapped. A small piece of cortex is still visible, possibly suggesting that the polished …
